The First Thousand Years, by Robert Louis Wilken

This sweeping history begins with the life of Jesus and narrates the remarkable story of Christianity as it unfolded over the next thousand years. Unique in its global scope, the book encompasses the vast geographical span of early Christianity, from the regions around the Mediterranean Sea through the Middle East and beyond to central Asia, India, and China. Robert Louis Wilken, beloved professor and renowned author, selects people and events of particular importance in Christian history to bring into focus the full drama of the new religion's development. The coming of Christianity, he demonstrates, set in motion one of the most profound revolutions the world has known.Wilken tracks the growth of Christian communities around the ancient world and shows how the influence of Christianity led not only to the remaking of cultures but also to the creation of new civilizations. He explores the powerful impact of the rise and spread of Islam on Christianity and devotes several chapters to the early experiences of Christians under Muslim rule in the Middle East, Egypt, north Africa, and Spain. By expanding the telling of Christian history to encompass perspectives beyond just those of the West, Wilken highlights how interactions with new peoples and languages changed early Christian practices, even as the shared rituals of Christian people bound them in spiritual unity despite their deep cultural differences.

"Compelling. . . . An outstanding achievement.”—Maria E. Doerfler, Commonweal (Maria E. Doerfler Commonweal)

“Brilliant . . . a riveting story.”—Publishers Weekly  (Publishers Weekly)

“Ambitious and wide-ranging . . . [This] highly accessible volume abounds with lively tales and fascinating connections, and the color illustrations are a delight. Wilken’s recent scholarship has also given him a global perspective of impressive sweep.”—Philip Jenkins, Christian Century  (Philip Jenkins Christian Century)

“Elegantly written [and] highly readable.”—First Things  (First Things)

“Robert Wilken has written the best kind of authoritative historical survey.  Its treatment is learned, thorough, but also accessible for all aspects of early Christian history, and especially for the great significance of Islam to the entire Christian world from the seventh century forward.”—Mark Noll, author of The Rise of Evangelicalism: The Age of Edwards, Whitefield, and the Wesleys (Mark Noll 2012-08-06)

“A marvelous and unique survey, learned and authoritative, yet also a perfect introduction to the early history of Christianity.  Robert Wilken redraws many boundaries, expanding horizons, summarizing and analyzing with consummate skill.  This beautifully written book sets new standards on multiple levels, and should stand for a long time as the benchmark by which all other surveys are measured.”—Carlos Eire, author of Waiting for Snow in Havana: Confessions of a Cuban Boy (Carlos Eire 2012-08-06)

“This is a rich and wonderful book, not only because of Robert Wilken's narrative gifts, but because of his immense scholarly range and sympathies.  His is one of the few treatments of Christianity's first millennium for Anglophone readers that embraces the faith's whole history, cultural and geographical, Eastern and Western, Chalcedonian and Non-Chalcedonian, European, Asian, and African.  It is a pure joy to read.”—David Hart, author of Atheist Delusions: The Christian Revolution and Its Fashionable Enemies (David Hart 2012-08-06)

“Robert Wilken reminds us that our association of “global” developments in culture, communications and economics with the beginning of the Third Millennium forgets the world of the First Millennium, which was integrated by a universal faith.  This book is both unique and timely, the fruit of broad erudition and deep reflection.”—Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago (Francis Cardinal George 2012-08-06)

“I’ve been a fan of Robert Wilken for decades, but even he outdid himself on this one, a remarkable blend of scholarly precision and attractive readability.  It’s even more: I found it also spiritual reading, from a professor who detects something beyond the worldly at work in one of the most colorful institutions around.”—Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York (Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan)

“A lively, engaging, and highly enjoyable tour of the church’s first millennia.” —Jacob Sweeney, Semper Reformanda (blog) (Jacob Sweeney Semper Reformanda 2013-04-01)

“[A] masterly and generous-spirited account . . . [that] brings new freshness and clarity.”—Eamon Duffy, New York Review of Books (Eamon Duffy New York Review of Books)

"[W]ilken's book would make a nice addition to the library of a pastor or seminary student seeking an up-to-date overview of the first millennium of Christian history. His writing style makes it easy and interesting to read....His emphasis on the spread of Christianity beyond the Roman empire shows that the gospel has had a global reach from the very beginning of the church's history."—Joel Otto, Wisconsin Lutheran Quarterly (Joel Otto Wisconsin Lutheran Quarterly)

From the Author

An excerpt from Robert Louis Wilken’s The First Thousand Years:

In the early sixth century, a merchant set out from Egypt to sail to the southern coast of India. Like earlier visitors from the Roman Empire, he had undertaken the long journey to bring home peppercorns from the Malabar coastal region, and he called India the land where “pepper grows.”

The name of the sixth-century traveler was Cosmas, and because of his journey to India he is known to historians as Cosmas Indicopleustes, Cosmas the Indian Navigator. Cosmas was a Christian, and in his Christian Topography he reports on Christian communities discovered in his travels. He spent some time in Malabar, the southwestern coast of India, in present-day Kerala, where he found a church with a bishop appointed from Persia. He also visited Socotra, an island in the Arabian Sea, approximately two hundred miles south of Yemen and east of Somalia, where there were Christians with clergy who received their ordination from Persia. But even more striking, he got as far as Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) and there he discovered a church composed of “Persian Christians” performing, in his words, the “full ecclesiastical rite.”

Our histories tell us little about the mission to the Far East. As the spread of Christianity to northern Europe was the work of Latin-speaking monks, and the spread of Christianity among the Slavs was the work of Greek-speaking monks, so the spread of Christianity to the east was the work of Syriac-speaking monks from the Church of the East.

An outstanding survey by a gifted writer.
By Peter S. Bradley
Robert Louis Wilken's "The First Thousand" years is an exemplary survey of Christianity's first millenium. Wilken starts with the life of Jesus and follows an approach encyclopedically organized around topics and geography to close with the Christianization of the Slavs in the 10th Century. Along the way, he touches on chapters devoted to architecture, christological issues, the rise of Islam, music, China, India, Northern Europe, Justinian and Charlemagne.

That's a lot of ground to cover. Wilken is a wonderful prose stylist and his writing is graceful and informative. He also brings his own perspective to the survey and so we are treated to insights and topics that readers don't normaally get in usual surveys. For example, those familiar with Wilken's previous works will greet the discussions of Celsus [from The Christians as the Romans Saw Them] and the Cappodocian Fathers and Maximus the Confessor [from The Spirit of Early Christian Thought: Seeking the Face of God] like they were renewing an acquaintance with old friends.

As a survey, Wilken does cover some familiar ground - and strangely he does repeat information provided under one topic when he moves to tangentially related topics - but by and large Wilken's choice of topics is new, particularly in the decision to give non-European Christianity the attention it deserves. Thus, Wilken does emphasize how much of the Christian heartland of the first thousand years was outside of Europe and how at the close of the first millenium, Christianity, which had spread throughout the Middle East and Persia and Egypt and North Africa, found itself under Muslim rule. Wilken also compares the Latin approach to spreading Christianity, which brought the high culture into the Latin language, with the Eastern approach, which invented new alphabets for new languages and translated the sacred texts into those languages. I filed away a bunch of different factoids, e.g., "Copt" is a corruption of "Aegypos," i.e., Egyptian, with the first and last syllable lopped off by the Arabic invaders; and, Charlemagne's theologians were opposed to the veneration of icons, and although they were brought around to agreeing that it was not idolatrous, the residual distrust of the practice is a reason why icons never really caught on in the West; and it was a Christian philosopher named Philoponus who first injected the notion of a latent inertia into Aristotle's physics. (See p. 254.) We also get a perspective on the slaughter of Christians in Jerusalem by Zoroastrian Persians and how the long tradition of Syriac-speaking Christians gave way to the even longer tradition of Arabic-speaking Christians (who in some Muslim countries may well be in their last days.)

Wilken is exceptionally good at introducing us to the characters that make up this history, and, like any good survey, the introduction can spark the imagination and interest to wander off any of a number of departure points. Wilken's simple explanation of the what was at issue in the Nestorian controversy is also worth the price of admission. One caveat I will note is that this book lacks footnotes. We don't know what sources Wilken is citing. This is a problem insofar as I would like to follow up on some of his quotations from learned authorities. This is the second book I've seen with that feature. Perhaps the notes are on some website, but I could not find a reference to them. I don't know if this is a new trend in scholarship, but for those of us who are interested in following up on the material, it is disconcerting.

On the other hand, a nice feature of the book is that it includes five or six pages of maps, a chronological chart with key names and events and some nice color photos. For what it's worth, Wilken's observations about architecture intrigued me so much that I was induced to locate websites with pictures of the great mosque in Cordoba and an interactive 360 degree "virtual tour" of the Hagia Sophia. I'm not much of an "architecture buff" but it was awe-inspiring to think, for example, that I was looking at a place where Justinian once walked.

Another Excellent Book from Prof. Wilken
By Bill
If you enjoyed Prof. Wilken's "The Spirit of Early Christian Thought" and "The Christians As the Romans Saw Them," then you will almost certainly enjoy this book, intended for the general reader but crammed with interesting information about the Church's growth and struggles during its first millenium. Written with the engaging style and narrative flow of his earlier books, Prof. Wilken covers an immense amount of territory--geographic, religious, and historical--in a book that is relatively short for the scope of its subject matter, including forays into the evangelization of far-flung areas such as Central Asia, India, and China. The author is adept at placing important events in their full context. See, for example, how adroitly he places the events surrounding Christ's birth in Palestine within the context of both the Roman Empire's temporal power and the Pax Romana. The several chapters he devotes to the rise and rapid spread of Islam confirm his belief that this new religion posed the greatest threat to Christianity during its initial thousand years. Some professional reviewers have credited this book as Prof. Wilken's "tour de force." IMHO, that's a well-deserved appellation!

finely written but same old territory
By VA Book Lover
I am a huge fan of Wilken's book The Spirit of Early Christian Thought: Seeking the Face of God. I found it to be one of the most elegant and profound expositions about the early church that I have ever read.

But this new book, which I was looking forward to as a kind of grand synthesis, is something of a disappointment. 100 pages in I find myself wondering why he wrote the book. Nothing is new, and at 359 pages it moves at a brisk pace where much detail is lost -- indeed, where the gaps yawn like chasms.

The delay in the book's publication suggests that the author felt the need to digest the vastly more complicated narrative of this 2010 history Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years. They are different beasts, though.

The more apt comparisons are two classics: The Early Church (The Penguin History of the Church) (v. 1) and The Rise of Western Christendom: Triumph and Diversity, A.D. 200-1000, 2nd Edition (The Making of Europe). What I cannot figure out is why or how Wilken supercedes either of these classics. Whatever his ambition, he doesn't succeed. Sure, the writing is elegant, but both Chadwick and Brown are hard to surpass.

My advice: stick with the classics.

The Jerusalem Syndrome: My Life as a Reluctant Messiah, by Marc Maron

The Gospel according to Maron: a spiritual memoir of your average hyperintelligent, ultraneurotic, superhip Jewish standup comedian and seeker.

The Jerusalem Syndrome is a genuine psychological phenomenon that often strikes visitors to the Holy Land - the delusion that they are suddenly direct vessels for the voice of God. Marc Maron seems to have a distinctly American version of the Jerusalem Syndrome, which has led him on a lifelong quest for religious significance and revelation in the most unlikely of places.

Maron riffs on Beat phenomena with its sacred texts, established rituals, and prescribed pilgrimages. He spends some time exploring the dark side of things, as his obsessions with cocaine (known to Maron as "magic powder"), conspiracy theories, and famous self-destructive comedians convince him that the gates of hell open beneath Los Angeles. As his quest matures, he reveals the religious aspects of Corporate America, pontificating on the timeless beauty of the Coca-Cola logo and even taking a trip to the Philip Morris cigarette factory, where the workers puff their own products with a zealot-like fervor. The culmination of Maron's Jerusalem Syndrome comes during his own tour of the Holy Land, where, with Sony camcorder glued to his eye socket, he comes face-to-face with his own ambiguous relationship to Judaism and reaches the brink of spiritual revelation - or is it nervous breakdown?

Marc Maron has considerably adapted and expanded his praised one-man show to craft a genuine literary memoir. Whether he's a genuine prophet or a neurotic mess, he'll make you laugh as you question the meaning of life.

Funny and sweet
By Eileen G.
In this fluid memoir Marc Maron manages to be self-aggrandizing and self-effacing at once, to good effect. He's got an eye and an ear for detail, and can comment wryly on marriage (for example) without ever being misogynistic. He writes that he was his Grandma Goldy's first and favorite grandchild - and that this designation and honor is sticking for life. You will laugh a lot, and admire Maron's ability to sometimes make lemonade out of lemons. In addition, Maron is more than willing to tell us about the silly, sad, and ridiculous jams he has gotten into - and how he found his way out. Maron is not only smart; he is kind and compassionate without ever being maudlin. This memoir, by an American comic with a deservedly bright future, is funny and sweet and well worth reading.

If you use your heart, brains and guts every day, you may enjoy this.
By Michael Barrows
But really, if you can't take a joke, if you can't sympathize with others, if you refuse to give yourself an honest appraisal on a regular basis, if you've never taken a chance on a wild idea or a romantic urge, if you've never charged ahead of the crowd or hung back when the crowd surged ahead, if you've never gone down a different path, just to see where it would lead, you will be totally unable to comprehend what Maron is saying.

And he leaves a lot unsaid, expecting his audience to make some of the connections, as is necessary for all comedy. It's just that his leaps of logic are a little further and faster than most. And you have to adopt his view point. This is going to be refreshingly open and giving to some, and intensely uncomfortable for others.

One of my fellow reviewers here seemed to like all but the school days chapters. I felt that the humor and depth of the book maintained a fairly even keel throughout. Several other reviews seemed like simple personals attacks. From their ad hominem nature, with no specific reference to the book's contents, but posted after Maron had been broadcasting for a while (in fact, during the period that he had the top-rated morning show on radio - & then got fired), I suspect the freepers creep among us.

Those who fear the unchained mind will dislike this kind of humor most. Maron brings the light into Plato's Cave and who there will thank him? However, if you are a nice person with an occasionally nasty disposition, due to the tension of eternally searching -- & you're a little afraid it's all for nought? You will enjoy this greatly.

I was pleased to find this book, since it gives a lot of personal background as well as plenty of the kind of introspective comedy at which Maron excels.

He also had some rather uncharacteristic points of nostalgia (appropriate to the autobiographical form) along with the vivisection-like social and personal analysis that makes his stage and radio personae so engaging.

I only gave it 4 stars because I wanted it to be longer. I've re-read it several times over the last few years.

A few really good parts, anyway.
By Jason
I bought this because I think Marc Maron's standup comedy is hilarious. I caught a brief appearance of him on Comedy Central awhile ago and it took me several months to find out the name of the guy who made me laugh so hard. After finally finding out who he was, I found out he has a CD, Not Sold Out, and this book, The Jerusalem Syndrome. The CD is hilarious and I highly recommend it. Since no other CDs or a DVD of his standup is available (yet, anyway - fingers crossed!), I went ahead and got the book because he wrote it, not really knowing what it was about, with pretty high expectations.
The book is a fragmentary autobiography of some events in Maron's life, very little of which is directly related to his career as a standup comic.
The brief first chapter foreshadows the events that will occur later in the book during Maron's trip to Israel.
Chapters two through five cover Maron's life up to high school. I simply didn't find this stuff to be very interesting.
Chapter six covers Maron's college years, focusing on him adopting the Beat religion. The ideas and events in this chapter are very interesting, they're written about very well, and the chapter is very funny.
Chapter seven is another highlight of the book, covering the modest beginnings of his career as his comedian and his relationship (friendship is too strong of word) with Sam Kinison. Like the previous chapter the events here are interesting and funny, if not scary.
In chapter eight Maron recounts his foray into conspiracy theory, and how his credulity for that intellectual junk food led to him making a fool of himself. He does save some face, though, by turning his mind back on before the chapter is through. Maron does make a really good observation about conspiracy theory literature:
"The thing about conspiracy literature is that it's perfect for stupid people who want to seem smart and ground their hatred in something completely mystical and confusing, and it's good for smart people who are too lazy to do their homework. People can't argue with it without possibly implicating themselves."
What I don't get is, if this stuff really happened, how is it possible that he didn't learn from this and avoid the whole Jerusalem Syndrome thing, if that stuff really happened, too?
Chapter nine is hilarious, as Maron tells of his visits to a Philip Morris plant and the Coca-Cola museum. Maron gives great, detailed accounts of these visits and makes many humorous but true, if not obvious, observations.
Chapter ten provides a mish-mash of professional and personal experiences. I simply didn't think this stuff was very interesting or funny.
Chapters eleven through thirteen contain the events foreshadowed in the first chapter, including his trip to Israel and his experience with Jerusalem Syndrome. I don't know how much of this is true or exaggerated, but I thought most of this stuff was pretty stupid. Some of it is funny, but not in a very good way. Perhaps a Jewish person could relate to this more and find some value in it, but I could not.
Chapter fourteen is simply excellent. Maron returns home to do a benefit show for his old synagogue. He sees some friends and acquaintances from his youth and ends up helping out in a pretty big way. This concluding chapter is interesting and touching.
The Jerusalem Syndrome contains very little about Maron's career as a standup comic. There's a little bit about him getting his foot in the door as a comedian at The Comedy Store and then later a bit as he starts to make a name for himself with appearances on television. If you want more on the life and times of a standup comic, I don't think you can do any better than True Story, Bill Maher's fictional story of several standup comics trying to make careers for themselves during standup's golden years.
This book has some really good parts, but at least as many not so good parts. Perhaps the good parts make up for the not so good parts, but overall this was pretty disappointing considering how hilarious Maron's standup is. In any event, I'd rather just have more of Maron's standup comedy on CD or DVD.

problem solvers linear algebra
By jshatz
It is a good book filled with alot of information. I needed the book for a course I am taking in Math Anaylsis to help me prepare for the test I have to take. Math Analsis includes both algebra and calculus. It gives you the problem on top of the page and then gives you step by step instructions which is very good for slow math learners lke myself.

CSET Mathematics Test Takers...Hear Ye, Hear Ye...
By A Customer
If you are one of a handful of people who are attempting to pass the CSET Single Subject Mathematics Test, listen up. First, I have passed the CSET Math Section II exam. I am in the process of trying to pass the CSET Math Section I exam. While I still need to take it again, I now know the secret because the only difference between my first try on section I and second try was an 8 page section of the Linear Algebra Problem Solver book. My score went up 20 points and I KNOW the book is the reason. Now, I am trying to track down the problems from the REA Pre-Calculus Problem Solver book having to do with growth rates and logarithms..this will undoubtedly put me 'over the top'. These books work and I am now 100% sure that the exam writers are a subset of authors who helped put the problem solvers together. Here is how to use them if you did not pass the exam on the first try:
1) Look through them and pinpoint the questions that look familar to you from your first (or second) experiences taking the exam.
2) Know the 3-4 questions from these books (cold)which are almost exactly the same as the exam questions. In my case, this comes from a mere 8 page section found on ppg. 481-488 of the REA Linear Algebra Problem Solver text.
3) Supplement this with information from [...] and download all 40 pages or so of the math listed there.
4) Finally, know the example section from the CSET site COLD, particularly the essay section. Take the Field theory answer and turn it into a matrix so that you can formulate an answer quickly on the actual exam.
I was able to pull off section II of the CSET and had a vague idea of what I was doing at the time. Now that I have had time to review my own process and recall the questions, I am sure there is a method to my madness. I should also like to add that I am a Multiple Subject Credential candidate and passed these subtests (along with the RICA) without any problems and so consider myself quite an accomplised CSET test taker...Good Luck. Stalking the Wild Dik-Dik: One Woman's Solo Misadventures Across Africa, by Marie Javins

Stalking the Wild Dik-Dik is a spirited African adventure of a solo woman traveler whose overland excursion across the continent includes challenges, inevitable mishaps, and more than a few debacles.

Author and world traveler Marie Javins is an unflappable narrator, who takes even the most bizarre and patience-trying situations with a dose of good humor. Javins fell in love with Africa when she traversed the continent in 2001 as part of a larger world tour. She later returned to spend half of 2005 revisiting the people and places that had so impacted her on her first trip. Javins was struck not by the desperation of Africa, but by its hope — the dignity of its people, the vibrancy of its cities, and the inherent adventure that is inherent it offered.

Stalking the Wild Dik-Dik is a funny and compassionate account of the sort of lively and heedless undertaking that could only happen in Africa. Javins's brushes with wildlife are punctuated with more serious dilemmas. Through it all, Javins's experience of Africa is life-altering, and her witty observations make for the best kind of travel literature which takes its readers into the heart and soul of the continent.

A thoroughly enjoyable journey into the labyrinth of people, animals and past that is Africa
By F. Dane
When writing about Africa - a travel genre of its own these days - some approaches seem to be more popular than others. There is the lone adventurer routine - preferably with the hero in a 4WD or on a motorcycle, as in "Running with the Moon" by Johnny Bealby - where the author invariably finds himself stranded in the heart of darkness and somehow lives to tell. And there's the high-brow, intellectual approach - perhaps most famously executed by Paul Theroux in "Dark Star Safari" - whose literary prowess is matched only by his equally limitless gift for misanthropy and self-pity.

And then there's Marie Javins - a bona fide globetrotter whose obsession with overland travel made her zigzag the African continent in 2001 as part of a world tour, and as if that wasn't enough, then came back for more last year. Author of several tent camping guides and thus no stranger to roughing it a bit, Ms Javins succeeds in straddling both approaches and with "Stalking the Wild Dik-Dik" comes out as something of a thinking man's - or should that be woman's - heroine. Much like Theroux did, the author wants to show us that there is more to Africa than war and misery, and contrary to him she actually succeeds in doing so. With the narrative set against an engaging and at times heartbreaking story of a more personal nature, the author takes the reader on a thoroughly enjoyable journey into the labyrinth of people, animals and past that is Africa.

Greatly appreciated and warmly recommended.

Marie Javins' Africa
By John J. Noack
Imagine the pleasure of opening your mailbox to find a whole stack of sequential letters from a friend traveling abroad: it would be impossible not to sit down and read them all at once. Marie Javins' writing is exactly like that. Possessing both talent and wit in abundance, Marie is the traveler most of us would like to be: fearless, easygoing, observant, and culturally wide-awake. Her writing is filled with easy, knowing humor, without the pretense of cleverness for cleverness' sake. Marie is at her best in this book portraying the boredom, fatigue, and frustration of travel in hot, dusty, crowded, and cramped trains, buses, and trucks as she makes her way across the African continent from Namibia to Egypt. Marie invites us to an Africa that is far from our popular imagination, yet even more intriguing - it should be mandatory reading for anyone considering travel there. Immersed, you feel like a familiar friend and travel companion as Marie shares her intimate thoughts and observations, and asks all the right questions about the people, diverse cultures, and animals she encounters. Her adventures and near-death experiences make for a thrilling read, and put to rest any fears that the great continent has been tamed.

Anyone who enjoys travel will enjoy this book - highly recommended.

Come along for a fun overland ride through Africa
By Tim Leffel
The beauty of reading an account of a long overland journey is that you can live the experience through someone else, still enjoying your hot shower, comfy bed, and well-stocked pantry at home. Javins' book is one of those conversational, easy-reading tales that doesn't try to dazzle you with its erudite suppositions or try to make grand expositions on the nature of what's wrong with Africa. Instead there are just musings on impossible questions, such as "Should I be accepting personal responsibility for slavery, the price of coffee, and colonialism?"

The book mostly just goes for a long journey and takes you along for the ride: from Cape Town to Cairo via a meandering route up the east after heading through Botswana and Namibia. She admits that the first time she went to the continent it was just something to cross off a list: "Wash clothes. Buy toilet tissue. See Africa."

Javins' goal was to do it all without getting on a plane, as part of a round-the-world tour on the ground and water only. In the end she has to hop a flight from Sudan to Egypt to catch a freighter when, as expected, the schedule doesn't quite move as planned. The mishaps here are natural ones though, things that any traveler will encounter on the continent, with no scenes that make us feel as if the author was intentionally seeking out bad situations just to enliven the story. Of course the natural hurdles in Africa can be bad enough on their own. In this case it's a Namibian taxi driver who keeps nodding off at the wheel, a bus wreck in Ethiopia, and and enough scamster touts to fill a small city.

Despite the luxury camps and expensive safari trips Africa is known for, it is still a wild frontier for anyone trying to cross it by land and this book is a great way to figure out if you're up for it yourself. If you're not, you can ride along then go take a hot shower at home.

Love and Honor in the Himalayas: Coming To Know Another Culture (Contemporary Ethnography), by Ernestine McHugh

American anthropologist Ernestine McHugh arrived in the foothills of the Annapurna mountains in Nepal, and, surrounded by terraced fields, rushing streams, and rocky paths, she began one of several sojourns among the Gurung people whose ramro hawa-pani (good wind and water) not only describes the enduring bounty of their land but also reflects the climate of goodwill they seek to sustain in their community. It was in their steep Himalayan villages that McHugh came to know another culture, witnessing and learning the Buddhist appreciation for equanimity in moments of precious joy and inevitable sorrow.

Love and Honor in the Himalayas is McHugh's gripping ethnographic memoir based on research among the Gurungs conducted over a span of fourteen years. As she chronicles the events of her fieldwork, she also tells a story that admits feeling and involvement, writing of the people who housed her in the terms in which they cast their relationship with her, that of family. Welcomed to call her host Ama and become a daughter in the household, McHugh engaged in a strong network of kin and friendship. She intimately describes, with a sure sense of comedy and pathos, the family's diverse experiences of life and loss, self and personhood, hope, knowledge, and affection. In mundane as well as dramatic rituals, the Gurungs ever emphasize the importance of love and honor in everyday life, regardless of circumstances, in all human relationships. Such was the lesson learned by McHugh, who arrived a young woman facing her own hardships and came to understand—and experience—the power of their ways of being.

While it attends to a particular place and its inhabitants, Love and Honor in the Himalayas is, above all, about human possibility, about what people make of their lives. Through the compelling force of her narrative, McHugh lets her emotionally open fieldwork reveal insight into the privilege of joining a community and a culture. It is an invitation to sustain grace and kindness in the face of adversity, cultivate harmony and mutual support, and cherish life fully.

A Gem of a Book
By A Lover of Good Books
It's a shame this book was published by a university press that gave it such a dull academic-sounding title. The story you'll find within its pages is a wonderful eye-opening memoir that takes you deep into daily life in a tiny village in Nepal back in the 1970s--when the traditional way of life had not yet succumbed to the forces of globalization.
The author does what the best authors of memoirs do--she allows herself to become almost a transparent vehicle for you, the reader. You experience at a strange and exotic world peering through her eyes and reading her vivid descriptions. She keeps her analysis to a minimum but shows you enough that you can draw your own conclusions.
When I was done reading this book, the people she had described seemed so real to me it was hard to believe I hadn't met them myself.
Honest, authentic, and completely without the pretentious literary tone that ruins so many current memoirs. A great book!

I loved this book
By John Comings
If you have been to Nepal, were a Peace Corps Volunteer, or lived in another culture, you will love this book. The people in this Nepali village came alive for me, and the writer was honest about the pleasure and the pain of living in another culture.

Coming to Know Another Culture
By Alexandra Schultheis
'Love and Honor in the Himalayas' will appeal to anyone who has ever desired to travel to distant lands and lose (or find) him- or herself in the invigorating freshness of new experiences, cultures, and friendships. Living as the daughter of a Gurung family in a remote Himalayan village in Nepal, McHugh experiences the incredible richness and immediacy of everyday high mountain life. Hers is a perspective unimagined by the casual tourist, and through her wonderfully rendered observations, we are challenged to look beyond our own comfortable Western lives at a culture that deserves our respect and admiration.

Beyond Objectivism and Relativism: Science, Hermeneutics, and Praxis, by Richard J. Bernstein

Drawing freely and expertly from Continental and analytic traditions, Richard Bernstein examines a number of debates and controversies exemplified in the works of Gadamer, Habermas, Rorty, and Arendt. He argues that a "new conversation" is emerging about human rationality—a new understanding that emphasizes its practical character and has important ramifications both for thought and action.

"A fascinating and timely treatment of the objectivism versus relativism debates occurring in philosophy of science, literary theory, the social sciences, political science, and elsewhere."—Choice

Equipped with a synoptic point of view, Bernstein has long worked the difficult terrain between continental philosophy and its more positivist Anglo-American counterpart. Here he traces what he believes is a key movement away from the broad modern tradition characterized by Descartes and the perennial search for philosophical foundations. Not always self-consciously, this emerging movement (Gadamer, Rorty, et. al.) rejects the Cartesian search for absolutes as ultimately futile; yet refuses to accept relativism as the only remaining recourse. The book's burden is to show how a viable `third way' is in fact emerging from the overlaps in the movement. His discussion is stimulating, ranging from Aristotle to Kuhn to Habermas, Kant and Arendt. No doubt he has put his finger on an acutely felt issue of our skeptical age, one that lurks ubiquitously in the background of more narrowly framed topics. Yet, how effectively this third way manages to extricate itself from the either-or of objectivism vs. relativism is up to the individual reader to judge. Frankly, I was disappointed, feeling that the results were unduly vague and pointing in the direction of a sophisticated brand of sociological relativism. Be that as it may, the text includes not a single mention of post-modernism, which may date the work in the eyes of some. Still, the meta-philosophical issue Bernstein addresses can be discussed quite apart from those specific to post-moderns and their recourse to outright relativism. As always, Bernstein remains an important interpreter of international trends and is well worth the read.

Toward a Deeper Understanding of Understanding
By Robert William DeMarco
Richard Bernstein is one of the most balanced and deeply thoughtful Americans doing philosophy today. Thoroughly at home in several different schools of contemporary thought, he writes with exceptional clarity and generosity of spirit. This book is one of his most important. At a time when most Americans seem convinced that objectivism and relativism are our only options and that if objectivism is ultimately incoherent nothing remains but a relativism that ultimately makes conversation impossible, this book can be a life-saver! Respectful of what the physical and life sciences can do and contribute, Bernstein makes clear the limits of their methods and the reasonableness of turning to alternative ways of knowing and thinking for other realms of meaning, value, and reality. A careful reading of this book could save everybody years of wandering up and down blind alleys. This is philosophy written to communicate with others and to be helpful, rather than to inflate the author's ego and display sophistication. It can change the way you inhabit the world and put your feet on a path that takes you in the direction of hope and solidarity.

Required reading for contemporary philosophy!
By Trash Gordon
Are we the measure of the all things or is truth independent of our beliefs and wishes? Bernstein begins tackling this question by observing that the real debate is not between absolutism and relativism but between...(well, read the title!) He claims that while few (philosophers anyway) believe that truth is eternal, many at least believe that it is not merely about our own subjectivity. But the real question for Bernstein is Why all the fuss? Is there a certain tone of anxiety present in the discussion? Bernstein says that indeed there is and it's due to conflicts in concern between the need to believe in a stable reality and the fear that rheified cultural schemes can become the basis of intellectual and social tyrany- Bernstein calls this a "pracical-moral concern" and manages to discuss it without presuming that there are no serious theoretical issues involved. I'm an absolutist myself (what a philosophical dinosaur I am!) and I found this book so enthralling that I engaged in frquent, feverish marginal annotating (and in my schools, you didn't buy the texts so you DID NOT mark them up). Whatever your philosophical persuasion, this book should bring some illumination along with many happy moments of reading. At this price, it's a bargain. GET IT!

The Captain of Köpenick, by Ron Hutchinson, Carl Zuckmayer

‘I used to think all the trouble in the world was caused by people giving orders. Now I reckon that it’s people being so willing to take them.’
Released after fifteen years in prison, trapped in a bureaucratic maze, petty criminal Wilhelm Voight wanders 1910 Berlin in desperate, hazardous pursuit of identity papers. Luck changes when he picks up an abandoned military uniform in a fancy-dress shop and finds the city ready to obey his every command. At the head of six soldiers, he marches to the Mayor’s office, cites corruption and confiscates the treasury with ease. But still what he craves is official recognition that he exists.
A nation heads blindly towards war as the misfit takes on the
state in Ron Hutchinson’s savagely funny new version of Carl Zuckmayer’s The Captain of Köpenick, first staged in Germany in 1931.

From Booklist
Stiteler has created an amusing and informative collection of advice and facts for bird lovers in this highly browsable and entertaining book. Birders everywhere love to not only “know stuff” but to be able to trot it out as needed, and Stiteler’s book is full of such “stuff.” Dividing the book into 10 chapters, the author groups her factoids by such topics as feeding birds, migration, bird love, and baby birds, but also allows her to answer common questions, explore why birding is hip, and follow the bird watching year. We learn how birds mate (quantity is the key word), the ten signs that you may need to cut back on bird feeding (neighbors refer to you as “bird lady”), why birds attack windows (they are trying to drive off a rival - their reflection), and the definitions of birding terms (a “lifer” is a new species to be added to your life list). Filling the text with myth-busting corrections, color photos illustrating topics, and ending each chapter with vacation ideas, Stiteler has created a wonderful potpourri for birdwatchers at all levels. --Nancy Bent

Not a heady tome, fun for birders and non-birding spouses
By E. Cullen
This is not The Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behavior and that can be a good thing. It is amusing and therefore can open up birding to those who have been held back by various presuppositions (true and untrue). Also, the author poses all sorts of "stupid questions" and answers them nicely (so you don't have to pose those questions or feel stupid). There is room on your bookshelf for both this book of secrets and the more weighty guide to Bird Life and Behavior.

A Birding Book Like No Other
By Ladyfingers
A well-intentioned friend thought I would enjoy reading 1001 Secrets Every Birder Should Know. Knowing nothing more than its title, I was pleasantly surprised to discover the author is none other than "Birdchick," whose interesting blog I earmarked long ago. She knows her stuff, and this birding book reflects that. It's a smattering of interesting topics and fun trivia, sure to interest any birder, from novice to expert. The book can be read in whatever order you like and because each snippet of information is brief, it's well-suited for quick reads while eating lunch, waiting for an appointment, vacationing, bedtime, etc.

I wonder where Ms. Stiteler gleaned all those little-known bird facts and tips. So many I never knew, and I have oodles of bird field guides and educational texts. When I'm out and about, there is always that one birder among the crowd who is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. People gather around for bird identifications and to learn whatever else they can from them. I'm confident Sharon Stiteler is one of those magnets when she is birding outdoors, and hooray, she shares what she knows in this very diverse book.

By BonZim66
This book got a lot of good reviews so I got it for my sister. She has a lot of bird activity in her back yard but sometimes has trouble identifying the birds. I thought this might help. I've only paged through it once and it as not as straight-forward as I thought it would be but I'm sure it will be fine after she uses it for a while.
