The Legend Continues...

Prematurely aged by the use of a power known as vitra, Ari now heads the Users, the secretive cabal that strives to protect humanity from those who would enslave them - the gols.

The User ranks were decimated shortly after Hoodwink vanished ten years ago, and she rebuilt the group from the ground up. In that time, she'd given everything she had to the Users, and human society in general. Body. Mind. Soul. For what?

It hadn't mattered. She hadn't changed a thing. The world still died a little every day. The snowstorms worsened, the cold became colder. Human enslavement continued. The Forever Gate remained standing, hemming them all in as it always would.

And then there was The Drop, a relatively recent phenomenon that involved human beings dropping dead for no apparent reason. Not just one at a time, but hundreds throughout the city, all at once.

Society was falling apart at the seams, despite her best efforts. Despite her attempts to seize power from Jeremy, the mayor.

Ari was ready to throw in the sack and nominate her replacement. She could no longer lead the Users. She had failed. She was far too old.

And then, ten years after she last saw him, Ari receives a message from the father she believed long dead.

Brilliant!
By Amazon Customer
The Forever Gate 2 was a great follow-up to the first book in the series. Here the mystery of the "Outside" continues, but now we are given a glimpse of just what that outside looks like. The characters are more fully developed in this book, now with the focus shifting to Hoodwinks' daughter. Every chapter has something suspenseful happening, making the book was very hard to put down, and Isaac's writing style flows like few others. To top it all off, the editing was superb. As a fellow Science Fiction and Fantasy author, I was able to honestly say upon finishing Isaac's first two novels that there's a lot to admire about his books. And as a reader, I was able to honestly say that I was never bored and never disappointed. Forever Gate 1&2 were both a very entertaining read! These books are a must-have for any Sci-Fi and Fantasy fan. The only negative thing I have to say, is that we still have to wait for Forever Gate 3!

Captivating! An Expertly Crafted Story Beckons!
By Mac Briggs Johnston
(**** This review has no spoilers ****)

This story will inspire a gamut of emotions in you, as it did for me, from sheer joy and captivation, to excitement, all the way to bringing you to the brink (or over the brink) of tears! You will find yourself laughing out loud, sometimes at the deftly woven humor, sometimes at the fantastic and amazing twists and turns the plot takes. The fact that Hooke can do all this speaks volumes about his capacity as a storyteller, easily catapulting him into that realm that is the exclusive abode of the best fantasy/science fiction writers.

This second instalment of "The Forever Gate" series strengthens and complements the first book, fleshing out the plot and characters further. It is mainly written from the perspective of Hoodwink's daughter Ari, providing a fresh, fascinating slant to the world, and the opportunity for the reader to perceive events from a female point of view.

Like the first, this second book is steeped in multi-level metaphors, causing the reader to question what is real and what is not; what really matters and what does not. An air of mystery permeates the book, and the origins of the world are suggested by one character, yet it remains to be seen if his perception is the true one.

The writing is exceptional, in that it conveys just the right balance of action, emotion and plot, while catching the reader in a tight net woven of suspense. Hooke's indefatigable concentration is remarkable, and he continually manages to compel the reader, always filling the pages with excellence and intrigue.

It sounds cliché, but I really can't wait for the next instalment!

Better than the first - give Forever Gate a go!
By Amy Joe White
Avid readers have an inherent judgment placed on the length of books. We assume that shorter books are appropriate for beginning or infrequent readers, and only lengthier books are fit for those who read with a constant passion. The Forever Gate series goes out to prove this idea wrong, and it does so with aplomb. The Forever Gate series challenges many ideas about how books should function - from length to genre, readers will find themselves questioning things they hadn't thought to question - including themselves.

If you've read the first book, you'll have a good idea of what's coming in this second installment. While the first book was from the perspective of the the character Hoodwink, this installment is on the journeys of his daughter, Ari. Now an old woman, Ari waits for her father to return from a world beyond the walls of the snowy city - the Outside. When he returns, and drags her into a world where reality meets conjecture and philosophy.

The novel blends fantasy and sci-fi in an intriguing way, all without wasting a word. With mind-bending questions that rival the Matrix and as complex and creative a world as The Wheel of Time series, The Forever Gate questions what it is to be real. In a world where everything is malleable, does our love for one-another remain?

One glorious little treat of this book (and indeed the series as a whole) is how new terminology walks carefully in the balance between over-usage and under-usage. The fantasy/sci-fi genre has always struggled with maintaining a balance: novels must introduce new, wonderful, and foreign material into reader's lives, but also fight to invite the audience rather than estrange them. It's gotten to the point where I personally keep a subconscious eye out for over-usage (or not enough). I was surprised, then, that The Forever Gate 2 never overloaded me or kept me guessing on what things were or what terminology meant. This follows suite from the first book, where new objects and people were announced and given just enough of an introduction to keep me intrigued, on my toes, and ready to learn more.

While you'll certainly run into what can be considered simple descriptors and dialogue, I found that it was perfect for the setting and character - the protagonist is a simple woman brought into complex matters, and it's only right the book should closely follow her observations in her own style.

Summing it up, then, I really did find myself enjoying this book. There were a few shortcomings here and there: word repetition, for instance, is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, and writers tend to cling to their favorite words like salt and pepper. While the author clearly fought with word choice here and there, the overall outcome was a pleasure to read. Some of the bits seemed a bit rushed... but on the whole, each section got the time it deserved. I will say I did enjoy this one even more than the first book.

If you're a fantasy fan but love your sci-fi just as much, give The Forever Gate series a go. It's a light read that will still challenge some of your most basic ideas of the world and yourself.

"A classic. . . . [It] will make an extraordinary contribution to the improvement of race relations and the understanding of race and the American legal process."—Judge A. Leon Higginbotham, Jr., from the Foreword

Charles Hamilton Houston (1895-1950) left an indelible mark on American law and society. A brilliant lawyer and educator, he laid much of the legal foundation for the landmark civil rights decisions of the 1950s and 1960s. Many of the lawyers who won the greatest advances for civil rights in the courts, Justice Thurgood Marshall among them, were trained by Houston in his capacity as dean of the Howard University Law School. Politically Houston realized that blacks needed to develop their racial identity and also to recognize the class dimension inherent in their struggle for full civil rights as Americans.

Genna Rae McNeil is thorough and passionate in her treatment of Houston, evoking a rich family tradition as well as the courage, genius, and tenacity of a man largely responsible for the acts of "simple justice" that changed the course of American life.

Early History of civil rights litigation
By Alan Mills
Charles Houston was the father of Brown v. Board of Ed--but tragically died in 1950, just as this historic litigation was getting underway.
It is hard to imagine any other lawyer--not to mention a Black lawyer in the 1940's who could have had a greater impact on the law as we know it. A truly remarkable human being. He not only gave birth to the NAACP's school desegregation campaign, but he also broke ground in employment discrimination, union rights, and many other developing fields of law; not to mention founding the modern day Howard Law School, which has served as the incubator for virtually all fo the civil rights litigation in the 20th Century, running a private practice, writing a regular newpaper column, and holding public office (the D.C. school board).
Ms. McRae thankfully spends only a brief time on his family history, and then gets right to the story of Houston's legal career. However, one story from Houston's formative years is instructive: When Houston served in the (segregated) Army (in WWI), he was appointed to decide the fate of a Black soldier. His investigation showed that the alleged infraction had been blown out of proportion. However, he was ordered by his superiors to find the soldier guilty, and sentence him to hard time in the brig. As a result of this experience, Houston vowed to learn the law, so that he could devote his life to ensuring that Blacks could never again be subjected to this type of injustice. He succeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams.
The moral? I suppose the racist superior officer lived to regret the day that he set Charles Houston on the path of justice--a [ath which ultimately lead to the destruction of legally enforced racial segregation in America--talk about a short sighted victory for racism!
Anyone who is interested in reading the story of a true (but underappreciated) American hero would do well to read this book!

An Unknown Giant
By Patrick J. Wiggin
During my student teaching experience, my students asked me to find them someone besides Martin Luther King, Jr. to study during Black History month, as they thought they had heard enough about him (unlikely, but all the same..). It took only a moment of research to discover the name Charles Hamilton Houston, who I confess I was unfamiliar with at the time. Now, having read a number of books about the work of the NAACP Legal Office and Houston himself, I can wholeheartedly recommend this biography of his life to any reader interested in learning about the man who laid out the legal strategy against legal segregation and the overturning of Plessy v. Ferguson. Genna Rae McNeil has done an outstanding and detailed study of the life and impact of Houston, and while in depth in its research, it is very readable and engaging as well. Highly recommend.

i never knew about Mr. Hamilton until I read about Thurgood Marshall. I am impressed with his commitment to the African American community and his profound words on helping other minorities in the same struggle.

This was an interesting book with a great message.
By A Customer
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a great story of virtues, trust and honor. The story goes like this the knights of the round table were sitting around when the green knight appeared and decided to test one of the knights to see if they are as noble as they are said to be. He asks to see if any one is interested to strike him with a weapon of their choice and to receive to same blow in one year and one day's time. Sir Gawain says he will take to the challenge, choosing and axe and deciding to chop the green knights head off, he doesn't relies that this is a test, and proceeds with he's weapon through the green knights neck. Sir Gawain thinks now that he has killed him that he will not have to receive the same blow in a year and one day's time. But the Green Knight picks up his head and wonders off. Nearly a year passes and Sir Gawain decides to head off. Along the way he encounters fights with great beasts, cold and wet weather, but little does he know he continues to be tested along the way. Then one day he stumbles along a castle and is invited in by the owner. Then one day he stumbles across a castle and is invited in by the owner. He accepts his offer and goes inside he stays there and is made to feel very welcome. Tomorrow he will spend the day in the host wife company and he make a deal with the host that the host will exchange for what he receive with what Sir Gawain receives. So he stays the night. The next morning soon after the host and his men have left the castle, to his surprise the host wife enters the room he is staying in and gives him a kiss. At the end of the day the host and his men return home with what they have caught and exchange the catch for the kiss. But I will leave it there because it is such a good book that you should read it your self. The information from the time that this was written was given from these sorts of stories because they are written in such detail the original of this story is in a museum in England. It was read by using a mirror to read the other side because the ink was still wet when the book was closed.

Just breathe, Kacey. Ten tiny breaths. Seize them. Feel them. Love them.

Four years ago Kacey Cleary’s life imploded when her car was hit by a drunk driver, killing her parents, boyfriend, and best friend. Still haunted by memories of being trapped inside, holding her boyfriend’s lifeless hand and listening to her mother take her last breath, Kacey wants to leave her past behind. Armed with two bus tickets, twenty-year-old Kacey and her fifteen-year-old sister, Livie, escape Grand Rapids, Michigan, to start over in Miami. Struggling to make ends meet, Kacey needs to figure out how to get by. But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle anything—anything but her mysterious neighbor in apartment 1D.

Trent Emerson has smoldering blue eyes, deep dimples, and he perfectly skates that irresistible line between nice guy and bad boy. Hardened by her tragic past, Kacey is determined to keep everyone at a distance, but their mutual attraction is undeniable and Trent is determined to find a way into Kacey’s guarded heart—even if it means that an explosive secret could shatter both their worlds.

From the Author
Thank you for picking up Ten Tiny Breaths. This was an emotional one to write and I have fallen completely in love with it. Expect Livie's story in spring, 2013

From the Inside Flap
"Just breathe," my mom would say. "Ten tiny breaths ... Seize them. Feel them. Love them." Every time I screamed and stomped my feet in anger, or bawled my eyes out in frustration, or turned green with anxiety, she'd calmly recite those same words. Every single time. Exactly the same. She should have tattooed the damn mantra to her forehead. "That makes no sense!" I'd yell. I never understood. What the hell does a tiny breath do? Why not a deep breath? Why ten? Why not three or five or twenty? I'd scream and she'd simply smile her little smile. I didn't understand it then.
I do now.

BRILLIANT READ!!
By Mandy @ I Read Indie
I rambled a bit when writing this one...

When I say whoa! I mean whoa! Heaven help me this book had me all kinds of crazy by the time I got to the 'shattering' moment towards the end of the book. And by then do you know what happened? Hubs rolls over in bed and tells me to turn off my nook and go to bed. Yeah, yeah I understand it was 2am. But sheesh! Someone's life was hanging in the balance here. Doesn't he realize that fictional characters are people, too?

So we have Kacey...poor messed-up-in-the-head-beyond-any-kind-of-help Kacey. I don't even know where to start with her. Girl has so much baggage a pack mule looked at her and said no. But gosh, I hurt for that girl something fierce. Yeah she had a crazy, broken life...but she had a younger sister to look after so she stepped up and became the person her sister needed her to be. Social life be damned. And her witty outbursts are like music to my ears. Girl has a sarcastic tongue and isn't afraid to use it. The things she calls people is hilarious and I couldn't get enough of her character.

Then we have Trent. Oh lordy, the angels had to be singing the day he was made, cause dude is hot. Shhh, do you hear that? Oh that was just the sound of Kacey's heart beating; her returning from the dead so to speak. Trent makes her feel things she hasn't felt since the death of her parents. But Trent's baggage is just as heavy. And the moment his past and hers collide...lives go beyond shattered.

You know what I loved a lot about this book? The secondary characters are just as great as Trent and Kacey. They all play a pivotal role in the story and Tucker did an awesome job with them. I actually cared quite about the secondary characters, more so than I usually do with other books. Livie, Storm, Mia and even Dan and Tanner are no back seat passengers. Their characters stand out so much in this book.

The last part of the book with Dr. Stayner I think was some of my favorite Kacey moments. Both her and the Dr were hilarious together. But during this time I was also a blubbering mess. Too. Much. Emotion. Like I said before...this book had me all kinds of crazy and I absolutely wouldn't have it any other way.

To say I was floored with this book is a huge understatement. I was utterly in love with it. And I will let you in on a little secret...I think I am more in love with Tucker as an author writing this than I was with her Casual Enchantment series. That is definitely saying something for this book...because I adore that series. I also did a lot of bookmarking. Too many sentences caught my eye; too many quotes I didn't want to forget.

Tucker did a phenomenal job with this book. I can't say that enough. This whole book...from the beginning, to the middle, up until that ending...was done to complete perfection. Do I recommend this book? Abso-freakin-lutely! Ten Tiny Breaths is most definitely one of my favorites this year and will be at the top of my must reread list. You must read it and then I dare you not to gush about it.

These are just a few quotes I loved from the story...too many others to share.
*******
To say that she's fanatical would be an understatement. She won't come to Miami unless Jesus himself is holding a convention.
*******
"It's okay. I figured it was all a bit too much, too fast." One finger hooks into mine, buckling my knees with waves of excitement.
I think I am going to fall in love with this man.
*******
"I'll make you whole again, Kacey. I promise you, I will," he whispers. And then his mouth covers mine.

The most compelling book I've read this year!!!
By Nancy Straight
BUY THIS BOOK!!

I've never started a review with these three words, but Ten Tiny Breaths is a book everyone should read. Why?

Kacey is the main character and she is NOT the poster child for great choices. She's a little rough around the edges, scratch that, she's raw. Kacey survived a horrific accident and the survival guilt consumed nearly her every waking thought. She meets an incredibly handsome, understanding, sweet, and sexy neighbor - Trent. WOW - talk about wanting a fictional character to come to life. . .

The first 80% of the book, the story unfolded effortlessly and I couldn't wait for the two of them to get together. OMG I COULDN'T WAIT and then something awful happened. I refuse to tell you what because you NEED to read this story.

I always base my review stars on how my body reacts to a story. Ten Tiny breaths had my heart racing, my palms sweating and tears streaming down my face (soaking the collar of my shirt). To say it was a compelling story is not even close to adequate.

Who should read this? Okay, it's a little spicier than what is typically acceptable for young adults - BUT - I think everyone with a drivers license needs to read this. One poor decision can set a chain of events in motion that can never be undone.

I loved the author's writing, the characters, the plot, and the pace. When I finished, my very first thought was I wanted my 15 year old son to read it. This story is an ABSOLUTE MUST READ!! And after you read it, recommend it to everyone you know, because this story will capture their heart, too!!

Ms. Tucker, thank you for writing a story that has the potential of saving lives. I would dare anyone to read this and not think twice about drinking and driving. Ten Tiny Breaths is a story that will stay with me for years to come. You are a Rock Star!!

Ten Tiny Breaths didn't work for me
By Book Worm
This book has a similar theme to it that has been running through a lot of contemporary romance this year. Female heroine is messed up due to some trauma, which she doesn't want to talk about, male hero tries to save her by trying to get her to open up but also has his own hidden issues. I like these books they have been done well with, Easy, On Dublin Street, Sea of Tranquillity, Charade, The Edge of Never, just to name a few. I like reading about people overcoming their issues and falling in love, but this one did not work for me, and it was down to three main points.

1. Kacey for me was a hard character to like. She reminded me of an even more messed up Jocelyn from On Dublin Street. But whereas Jocelyn was `lets just keep to myself', Kacey was `lets let everyone know I am broken'. She was so messed up that her interactions with everyone did not make me like her and sympathise with her but made me just question why anyone would talk to her. I know this was meant to be part of her and hence part of the book, but I just don't think so many people would have just kept giving her chances. They had no reason to build a relationship with her so why try? Sure as the book moves on and Kacey starts to let people in she can be at times funny, but even then she was hard to like.

2. The romance did not work for me. When Trent and Kacey first met, I was "oh no instant love from him" (it was instant lust from her, I can work with that). I kept thinking why with that minimal blasé interaction is he going after her? And then my brain went "oh no, no no no no no". I could only think of one other reason why he would (which I am not going to tell you). I then all I could think is "this is creepy, really really creepy". I actually wanted to stop reading at this point (and I was only about a quarter into it). I kept reading the book hoping I would be wrong (not going to say if I was or was not), as I wanted to know if I was right or wrong. I also hoped that my feelings would change, but I never got into their relationship. I am not sure if this was because of the creepy feeling or because the relationship was hot and cold. Trent refused to sleep with Kacey, but then he would be all over her. Some may find that this builds tension, normally I would agree, but in this case it was too much of Kacey wondering "does he like me or doesn't he", over and over and over and over again. Kacey's inner monologue of this did get on my nerves. In fact Kacey had ALOT of internal monologue. I have to admit I felt I was being told a lot of things rather than feeling them.

3. There were quite a few points during the book when I was told things and I had questions and wanted more information to complete the picture. For instance, why did they not tell their aunt about the uncle? And the big one; When Kacey finally gets help this is wrapped up quickly, for me this could have been the brilliant part of the book where we really see a character change, see the steps it takes to do this, but all you get is snippets at different times from the months it takes. Those snippets are great but it felt like only being told half of it. In addition I felt like there was one major point that was pushed in this book, that Kacey had to do to `heal' and move on, and I felt this was too simplistic and too romanticised for such a serious topic.

This book does have a brilliant underlying message about the impact that drink driving accidents have on everyone involved, not just for the people in the cars, but also on the friends and family of those involved in the accident. But just because I think that doesn't mean I have to like the book. Honestly I would also like to add something about how the book ended, but that would be making this review a spoiler (I may add it in comments if people want to know). Oh, and for those of you who don't want a series, accoarding to Goodreads there is a sequel. Though given this story ends, not sure why. Given the reviews posted a lot of people are obviously going to like this book. It just did not work for me.
Will I read it again? No
Would I recommend it? Sorry no.

Chinatown. City within a city. Home to street cobblers and herbalists, tai chi masters and kung fu students, outdoor fish markets and lots and lots of restaurants. And best of all, when the Chinese New Year begins there's a New Year's Day parade, complete with a lion dance.
Young readers will be equally fascinated by the tour of this colorful neighborhood--and by their tour guide and his grandma who live there.

From Kirkus Reviews
A fictionalized walking tour of New York's Chinatown at the time of the New Year celebration, conducted by a young Chinese- American boy and his grandmother. Together they make their way through the crowded, colorful streets, into shops and restaurants, and past street vendors. They watch the traditional New Year's Day parade and lion dance, and wish each other ``Gung hay fat choy.'' Low's full-bleed oil paintings glow with red, gold, green, and turquoise; as is true of Low's work for Elaine Moore's Good Morning, City (1995), the pages are full of atmospheric lighting effects, as when morning sun first strikes the upper stories of the buildings, then streams through a window into the dark, dusty interior of an herbal shop, or when flames leap beneath a huge restaurant wok, or firecrackers spark and jump about the great tossing head of the New Year's lion. Readers will enjoy comparing Low's paintings with some similar scenes (roasted ducks hanging in a restaurant window, an open-air fishmonger, youngsters training in a kung fu studio, the squat black drum and colorful banners in the parade) photographed by Martha Cooper for Kate Waters's Lion Dancer (1990). A Beautifully Illustrated Story of A Child's Day in the City
By A Customer
In this story, with beautiful jewel-toned illustrations reminiscent of Hopper's paintings, a young child, accompanied by his grandmother, shows the reader various aspects of his life in an urban Chinatown. The busy urban setting takes on the elements of smalltown life as the pair cross a street, watch tai chi practicioners, greet the street cobbler, and visit the produce market, the fish market, the herbalist, a kung fu class and other fascinating places. The story culminates at a parade celebrating Chinese New Year. The colorful pictures, rich with detail, and simple, informative text give lots of opportunities for discussion. My two-year-old son has loved this book from the first time we read it, and requests it over and over again.

Beautiful illustrated story

I live in San Francisco and used to teach second grade . . . I read this book to my class every year before our annual Chinatown field trip and it was always a smashing success. It's a beautifully written, beautifully illustrated story, that really immerses children in a cultural world that is different from the one in which most of them live. It inspires a lot of wonderful conversation about Chinese history and Chinese-American culture, but doesn't other-ise it . . . it's very approachable and welcoming.

Great children's book, illustrations, story, beautifully done
By Julie
We love this book. My eight year old son, who is Chinese American, loved learning about Chinatown, Little Italy, disputes between cultures and neighborhoods and how they can be solved, and much much more while looking at the lovely illustrations. This is a treasure of a book.

Somebody Killed His Editor: Holmes & Moriarity, Book 1, by Josh Lanyon

Thanks to an elderly spinster sleuth and her ingenious cat, Christopher Holmes has enjoyed a celebrated career as a bestselling mystery writer. Until now. Sales are down and his new editor is allergic to geriatric gumshoes. On the advice of his agent, he reinvents his fortyish, frumpy, recently dumped self into the sleek, sexy image of a literary lion, and heads for a Northern California writers conference to try and resurrect his career. A career nearly as dead as the body he stumbles over in the woods. In a weirdly déjà vu replay of one of his own novels, he finds himself stranded in an isolated lodge full of frightened women?and not a lawman in sight. Except for J.X. Moriarity, former cop and bestselling novelist. The man with whom he shared a one-night stand - okay, maybe three - long ago. The man who wants to arrest him for murder. A ruthless, stalking killer, or a hot, handsome ex-lover. Which poses the greater danger? It's elementary, my dear Holmes!

Engrossing, funny, masterful
By Jessewave
Somebody Killed His Editor opens with lots of danger and 'atmosphere'. Armed with his new wardrobe which consists of silk Calvin Klein's underwear and designer outerwear purchased on the advice of his agent Rachel to revamp his frumpy look and writing career, our hero Christopher Holmes (is this a take on Holmes of Sherlock Holmes fame?) is on his way to a writers' conference in Northern California. After abandoning his disabled car close to his destination, he's caught in the driving rain on a bridge that is breaking up and he doesn't know if he will get to safety before it and he fall into the raging torrent below. He barely makes it to the other side in time in his impractical but fashionable Bruno Magli boots. Exhausted, he stops to change his new boots which are ruined, and just when he's congratulating himself on escaping death by the slimmest of margins he comes across the body of a woman who has obviously been murdered, and worse, he gets the feeling that someone is watching him. He rushes out of there as fast as his feet can make it in their uncomfortable new shoes to find the location of the lodge where he and the other authors are supposed to be staying.

When he arrives at his destination, if Christopher thought that at least there would be some relief and good times he's mistaken, because the first attendees he sees other than his agent are his new editor who has him in his sights, Steven "Satan" Krass, and former cop and now best selling author, J.X. Moriarity. Christopher and J.X. had a 'past', having met ten years ago when they had a brief fling but had not seen each other again until the fateful weekend. How the tables have turned in terms of Christopher's and J.X.'s fortunes! When they met all those years ago Christopher was a successful author and J.X was a cop - now Kit (as J.X calls him) is on the outside looking in, a has-been, while J.X. is on top of his game, one of the best selling authors in his field.

In Josh Lanyon's mysteries there are always many suspects who have both motive and opportunity to commit murder and the task of figuring out whodunit is usually not too difficult although he's getting a lot better lately. In Somebody Killed His Editor, to add complexity to the story the main character is the prime suspect. The murder victim is Peaches Sadler, a best selling author who was one of Christopher's biggest critics - strike 1. Just when it seems there's a chance to reignite his stalled writing career, the next victim, Krass, publicly humiliates him; the following morning Christopher finds Krass's body, another murder victim - strike 2. Christopher is soon in the 'protective' custody of J.X. who is the chief investigator of the crime based solely on his past career as a police officer and his take charge attitude. Of the supporting characters, Holmes' agent Rachel and her sidekick and client Espie have a colourful past together which makes for some interesting moments in the book, as their past actions are suspicious and not always above board. Most of the other characters have enough in their former relationships with either victim for them to be considered credible suspects, and figuring out who has the most to gain by murder was an enjoyable task for me.

In typical Lanyon fashion the sex in the book is not the focus of the story nor is there a lot of it and if you read too quickly you might miss a good part of the action :) but what there is turns out to be tender and loving with great dialogue. In terms of the characterizations, neither protag is physically overwhelming although J.X. is certainly charming, charismatic, handsome and successful; Christopher Holmes' character would not set anyone's pulse racing since he's ordinary looking, small statured, middle aged, with no redeeming over the top physical attributes but he's smart, as are most of the author's protags.

The weather is a very important "character" and ambiance in this book as it sets the stage for most of the action. There's nothing like forced togetherness to bring out the worst in people, and in Somebody Killed His Editor this is all too true. Human beings when they know that they can't physically escape immediately from an unpleasant situation tend to act irrationally and drink to excess when under stress, which lowers their inhibitions and they say things that get them into trouble or killed which is the situation here. Many authors of murder mysteries use inclement weather to their advantage and Josh Lanyon manages to squeeze every ounce of tension and danger out of the havoc caused by the storm that trapped 50+ people with no means of egress or ingress.

The prose and dialogue are as wonderful and funny as we have come to expect from this author and here are a few examples -

"Maybe this isn't such a good idea," I said as he stepped out of his jeans--and I don't think Superman ever shed his clothes as fast or looked as gorgeous naked. "The sex is nice, but we seem to singe our eyebrows on the afterglow."
I arched up against him, fingers sinking into his back muscles. "That's...nice," I got out.J.X. raised his head. "Nice?" "Nice is highly underrated."

"The problem with murder was that it was contagious. Like eating potato chips, it was hard to stop at one ...."

Somebody Killed His Editor is the first book in a new series by Josh Lanyon - Holmes and Moriarity. Maybe lightning will strike twice and H & M will take the place of the Adrien English series in terms of fan appeal. Book 1 is an excellent start and I'm looking forward to the new adventures of our intrepid pair of authors, turned detectives. One of the keys for any successful series is that even though the plots are very important, readers have to love the characters and be invested in them and I think that Lanyon made brilliant choices in Christopher and J.X.who have great chemistry together. It also doesn't hurt that the sex between them is emotional, funny and hot. Somebody Killed His Editor reminds me in some ways of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot, complete with dramatic denouement scene.

This story is told from the 1st person POV, in Christopher's "voice," and I would urge those readers who don't like this technique to give it a try because Lanyon excels in this form of narration. This is a terrific story with great characters. I highly recommend it.

Somebody Killed His Editor

Christopher Holmes is attending a writers' conference, trying to resurrect his writing career, when he stumbles on a dead body in the woods. The conference takes on an eerie quality now that the news is out and everyone is wondering who killed Peaches. Despite his efforts, Christopher's career is still sliding downhill and now he's wondering if he could be the next victim. To make matters worse, J.X. Moriarity is attending the conference, too. J.X. is an ex-cop turned writer. Christopher and J.X have a little history together and it's repeating itself. With a murderer on the loose, they may never get the chance to see what might have been.

Somebody Killed his Editor is a suspenseful and witty tale. Christopher and J.X. do a good job of tearing each other up emotionally, making their eventual reconciliation that much sweeter. Josh Lanyon's usual blend of intense romantic angst and a cast of colorful characters make Somebody Killed his Editor a real page-turner. What makes Somebody Killed his Editor a little different from Lanyon's previous books is the light-heartedness of the story. The suspense is high, but the investigation is often a lot of fun. Christopher made me laugh a lot. When I read a Josh Lanyon book, I prepare myself for hot guys, a dead body or three, and an unconventional romance. I usually cry before I get my happily-ever-after. And I look forward to it every time!

my first m/m (but certainly not my last!) -- LOVED
By Paige Prince
KC at SmokinHotBooks and FV at Fiction Vixen were raving about Somebody Killed His Editor, and since my name is Kitty, I had to investigate what the fuss was all about. I do so love my curious nature.

Christopher Holmes is trying to resurrect his dying career by attending a weekend-long conference with his publicist. Steven Krass (the editorial director of Christopher's publishing house) happens to be attending, and maybe if he can pitch a new series, he might get picked back up. Only one problem: he has no new ideas. In fact, when his car breaks down as he's driving to the lodge, he's still trying to come up with something. Poor guy. He's forced to trudge along in a nasty storm and stumbles upon the body of Peaches Sadler. (No, really: Peaches.)

When Christopher finally arrives at the lodge and reports finding the body, he finds JX Moriarity, a former cop turned author and Christopher's one weekend stand from a few years before. There is obvious chemistry between them, and watching them try to fight these feelings while Christopher is named the prime suspect in not only Peaches' death but Steven Krass's as well, is hugely entertaining. I could not put the book down from the minute I started it!

I got angry as the other characters in the book ganged up on Christopher and blamed him for murders we (as readers) knew he didn't commit. Ok, it's not like the other characters saw what we saw, but still! I got riled up every time they shied away from or were snarky to him. (Great job by Josh Lanyon - he made me feel that despair and anger as Christopher battled to prove his innocence)

Somebody Killed His Editor is laugh-out-loud funny (for real... my family thought about having me committed while I was reading because I kept laughing so much) and a great read. The smexy scenes were fairly tame, but were hot enough that I needed to turn on a fan. And I loved the fact that the two main characters (the love interests of the book) are named for infamous archenemies - Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty.

Politica in Italia. Edizione 2008: I fatti dell'anno e le interpretazioni (Italian Edition), by Mark Donovan, Paolo Onofri
