Real people, real issues, and hard questions.
By A. C. Walter
Donald Margulies' "Dinner with Friends" received the 2000 Pulitzer Prize in Drama, a well-deserved award. The play deals with two couples who have been close for a long time, but now one couple is going through a divorce. Throughout the play, relationships are questioned and reorganized. The still-married couple find themselves assessing the strength of their own relationship and mourning the little corner of their world which dies when their friends divorce.

"Dinner with Friends" is a rare gem--a questing, moral play that takes an honest look at the issues of commitment and fidelity in today's world. I don't think I've seen a new play which delved so deep and true into the heart of an everyday issue, and with everyday characters, since David Mamet's "Oleanna." The last two scenes bare the relationships and souls of the characters so fully (and, thankfully, without overt hysterics) that I literally got the chills.

In scene three of the second act Gabe meets his friend Tom a few months after Tom and his wife have split. Tom is living with his travel agent girlfriend, and Gabe quickly tires of Tom's rationalizations and his descriptions of the fantasy life he has constructed around himself. Tom talks fanatically about his newfound freedom, and Gabe tells him he's starting to sound "like a Moonie." Gabe finally voices the essential problem he has with Tom's decision to leave his family. Gabe says, "The key to civilization, I think, is fighting the impulse to chuck it all." Then Tom tries to tell Gabe that maybe Gabe's own marriage isn't all that it appears to be; Tom has heard Gabe complain in the past, and Tom says that he knows the signs of trouble. The difference between the two men, however, is that Gabe believes in working at his marriage and cannot imagine ever giving up. "You don't get it," Gabe says. "I _cling_ to Karen; I _cling_ to her. Imagining a life without her doesn't excite me, it just makes me anxious."

Affecting. Modernistic. Real. Sad. Annoying.
By Christian Engler
The euphoric and blissful bubble that a functioning relationship can father is a wonderful thing. When two individuals are linked by common interests, shared ideals and beliefs, nothing in respects to a career, money or fame can come close to it; it is a wonderful, natural high to experience true love. However, what happens when a marriage does not work and the foundation that eventually led to that marriage was an erroneous one? In Dinner With Friends, playwright David Margulies explores just such a situation.
We have two couples, Beth and Tom and Karen and Gabe, all somewhere in their forties and all the best of friends; the former couple, Tom in particular, has grown rather weary about his workaday existence as a lawyer. His energy for life has waned dramatically, and who does he pour his blame on? His artist wife Beth. She in turn blames him for not being open enough. Thus, the blame game starts to take root. The latter couple, Karen and Gabe, get woven into this battle due to their friendship, a friendship that slowly begins to crack when they try to comprehend the depth of their friend's unhappiness, i.e. the banal conversations, the duty of paying off a mortgage, the raising of kids, etc. It is essentially the story of four baby-boomers who do not like the turn their lives are taking. One couple breaks up, and in the process of doing so, they almost develope a 'plastic' or 'artificial' Ken and Barbie personality, that because I'm divorced now I jog more and have better sex. An arrogant happiness developes. That artificiality affects Karen and Gabe deeply, because they debate if their friendship was one of a genuine nature. The good times of the past are no more, so what is there to look forward to?
Karen and Gabe are scared at the transition that their 'old' friends took, for if it happened to Tom and Beth, it could happen to anyone. And therein is where the power of this play lies: that divorce can happen to anyone.
In its own right the play is smartly written: vibrant, sharp, stinging, fast-paced and edgy. A smart, wry drama about an unpleasant and common issue.

Insight Well Seen
By A Customer
Last season's foursome relationship play, Closer, by Patrick Marber, has many deserving admirers, but I'm partial to Dinner with Friends, and not just for the Pulitzer award, or because it's an American play, not British. What Margulies does so deftly is create individuals, couples, and friendships, all of which are distinct entities ... in a play that shows great insight into my generation's struggle with intimacy. Reading or watching the play I find myself hating the divorcing couple, yet unable to dismiss them. They are fully credible characters, acting out of clearly realized inner needs. I would recomment Donald Margulies' play to anyone who appreciates subtle realsim, peppered with subtle insight and humor.

should have started with this book first
By Ernest Bylander
After trying several "how-to" books I tried this one. It is a winner and is written by an excellent teachers. I have MatLab because it is required by the book: "Tutorial on Neural Systems Modeling". And MatLab seems to have a very steep learning curve, and this book seems to scale the methods of ML successfully. I have used various such programs over the years: Basic, from DOS thru 3 HP versions and Visual Basic, Mathcad, 2 versions of Linux, C, C+, Mathematica etc. Also MatLab is based on Matrices, and I have had undergrad vectors, graduatecourse in Matrices, and a few Matrix Quantum Mechanics courses. However I found Matlab almost insurmountable. Hahn and Valentine overcome these drawbacks and even show where tutorials can also be found on the MatLab site. As an aside, it took from last October through this February to lease some part of MatLab. And several books later did help-some until this summer when I bought this book. I find this book to be the answer to my learning difficulties.

For an average user, may be too light in coverage: Book is for novice.
By Andrew Kim
The book is designed for the novice, and does not really delve into finer details.
It is relatively thin book with 400 pages. The audience is newbies with virtually
no knowledge of Matlab basics ( navigation of IDE, variables, numbers etc)

If you have previously worked with MatLab (or other software such as Maple, Mathmatica, etc) before,
this book maybe of little use other than a quick refresher. Most of the information in the book
is available on the web.

Good as a quick reference, and simple starter examples.

Excellent Introduction to MatLab
By Gerry Pete
Essential MatLab for Engineers and Scientists is an excellent introduction to MatLab and I would assume a good reference for experienced users. I purchased the R2013b version of the program whereas the text appears to be based on the 2012 version. In general, I think that Amazon should require the publishers to indicate the version of software on which the ebooks are based as I have downloaded ebooks that are not at all useful for the current versions. If the author updates the text of Essential MatLab for Engineers and Scientists, I would like to see additional information on the use of Tex and/or LaTex to incorporate Greek and other symbols for publishing MatLab output.

The Slave Trade: The Story of the Atlantic Slave Trade: 1440-1870, by Hugh Thomas

After many years of research, award-winning historian Hugh Thomas portrays, in a balanced account, the complete history of the slave trade. Beginning with the first Portuguese slaving expeditions, he describes and analyzes the rise of one of the largest and most elaborate maritime and commercial ventures in all of history. Between 1492 and 1870, approximately eleven million black slaves were carried from Africa to the Americas to work on plantations, in mines, or as servants in houses. The Slave Trade is alive with villains and heroes and illuminated by eyewitness accounts. Hugh Thomas's achievement is not only to present a compelling history of the time but to answer as well such controversial questions as who the traders were, the extent of the profits, and why so many African rulers and peoples willingly collaborated. Thomas also movingly describes such accounts as are available from the slaves themselves.

Amazon.com Review
The Slave Trade is a massive (900-page) book that attempts to document the entire history of the Atlantic slave trade, a sordid business that somehow prospered for more than four centuries. As the sheer heft of the book might indicate, the story is complicated. Much of the extensive research conducted by Hugh Thomas relates to rivalries both in Europe and Africa. Those who wonder how slavery could have existed in the United States may find revelatory the moral ambiguity of how the business of transporting slaves was conducted.

From School Library Journal
YA-Thomas concentrates on the economics, social acceptance, and politics of the slave trade. The scope of the book is amazingly broad as the author covers virtually every aspect of the subject from the early days of the 16th century when great commercial houses were set up throughout Europe to the 1713 Peace Treaty of Utrecht, which gave the British the right to import slaves into the Spanish Indies. The account includes the anti-slavery patrols of the 19th century and the final decline and abolition in the early 20th century. Through the skillful weaving of numerous official reports, financial documents, and firsthand accounts, Thomas explains how slavery was socially acceptable and shows that people and governments everywhere were involved in itAfrom African kings and Arab slave traders to the Europeans and Americans who bought and transported them to the New World. Despite the volatility of the subject, the author remains emotionally detached in his writing, yet produces a highly readable, informative book. A superb addition to YA collections.

From Library Journal
The age of exploration increased the slave trade, which had begun earlier with the Portuguese and didn't end in Brazil and Cuba until almost 1890. The volume was tremendous. Between 1492 and 1820, "five times as many Africans went to the New World as did white Europeans." Most of the great economic enterprises (sugar, cotton, etc.) of the first four centuries of colonization depended on slaves.

A MUST READ!
By events3
THE SLAVE TRADE: The Story of the Atlantic Slave Trade: 1440-1870 is, perhaps, the single most-important work dealing with the slave trade. This masterful work builds on and partially overlaps John Thornton's AFRICA AND AFRICANS IN THE MAKING OF THE ATLANTIC WORLD, 1400-1800 and Edward William Bovill's THE GOLDEN TRADE OF THE MOORS. It also provides an essential bridge between those works and Ira Berlin's MANY THOUSANDS GONE: The First Two Centuries of Slavery in North America & MAROON SOCIETIES: Rebel Slave Communities in the Americas (edited by Richard Price).
Starting with the first major shipload of African (white, café au lait and black) slaves taken in a razzia by Portuguese in 1444, Thomas briefly looks backward at the history of slavery among Christians, non-African Muslims and Africans - pagan, Christian and Muslim. He recounts the origins of the Atlantic slave trade - including the long-existing North African-Spanish conflict with mutual slave raids and the beginning of the coastal trade in West Africa associated with Prince Henry's desire for exploration, conquest, profit and religious zeal and the equal desire for conquest and / or profit of almost all African rulers and aristocrats, as well as of numerous merchants (especially Muslim and Mandingo), already familiar with the Trans-Saharan trade. Thomas recounts the early settlements in the Azores and Madeira and Cape Verde Islands, as well as the lengthy effort to conquer the Canary Islanders, including the guanches of Tenerife, and the explorations of Cadamosto. The trade began to be institutionalized by Agreements of mutual benefit between the west coast Africans and European traders (with increasing numbers of slaves being taken from the interior by coastal states)while the plantation system began to develop in Madeira and elsewhere. The fortress at El Mina (Sao Jorge da Mina) was established as well as Arguin and Luanda (which became one of the few exceptions to the principle of non-settlement - of Europeans in Africa - due to fears of antagonizing local rulers, losing trading rights and suffering debilitating and even deadly illnesses). Luso-Africans (persons claiming both Portuguese and African antecedents) increasingly took over the coastal trade in El Mina and Luanda. Despite the papal grant of Portuguese (extended to Spain when the two were temporarily united) monopoly over the trade, the English began entering the slave trade in 1562 under Captain John Hawkins and the Dutch began to be involved in the 1590s.
Thomas then describes the development of "corporations" given monopolies on trading slaves by the various European monarchs and the economic benefits accruing to various European towns, as well as the growing wealth, culture and influence of various West African towns involved the trade. In the 1600s, African slave began to trickle into North America followed by the eventual establishment of the slave-plantation system. Turning to the crossing, Thomas describes, in vivid detail, the horrible conditions slaves encountered aboard ship as well as the high rate of deaths for both (often shanghaied) sailors and human cargo and the inhumane treatment provided to both by the officers as well as the harshness suffered by the latter under the African captors. Included in this section (Book 4) is an account of the various non-human cargo brought to and from Africa.
Turning to the Abolition (of the Slave Trade, if not slavery, itself) movement, the author touches on the views, organizations and actions of political men like Pitt, Wilberforce, Benjamin Franklin and the Marquis de Lafayette as well as the anti-slavery philosophy of men like Montesquieu, Hume, Adam Smith and Burke (in opposition to the interests of men like Voltaire and Locke). In 1807, the reluctant slave owners, Madison and Jefferson, in America, enacted legislation banning Americans from involvement in the international trade of slaves while non-slaveholders William Pitt and William Wilberforce did the same in the British Empire. Great Britain began to pressure other nations to end the slave trade and many African states began to use more of their slave captives to produce goods for international trade in lieu of slave. Portugal, at the same time, began to trade in even greater numbers of slaves. African merchants also actively opposed the attempts by Britain's AFRICAN INSTITUTION to increase the industriousness and productivity of the general African populace due to the potential danger to their trading interests. Britain paid various African leaders to end the trade (although many captives were executed since the rulers could not sell them due to the abolitionist sentiments among Europeans and Americans). Still, slavery itself was not actually abolished in the British West Indies until 1838. In the mid-1850s Brazil and Britain neared war and Britain forced Brazil to adopt anti-slave trade measures in earnest. The book concludes with the end of Cuban involvement in the trade as Britain began to forcibly occupy some African states (setting the stage for the eventual "colonization" of the continent) in order to finally squash the trade - although the epilogue informs us that as late as 1980, 90,000 blacks are still reported as slaves to Arab masters.
It would not, of course, be fair to leave off without pointing some negligible errors in the book: First, the Sources and Notes section seems to have provided bold headings for some of the latter sections (books) but not the former. However, this does no discernable harm toward the body of the work and a few seconds study will clear up the confusion. In addition, while apparently relying on the best statistics available for the total number of slaves transported via the Atlantic / Trans-Atlantic journeys, the work fails to directly rebut some of the much larger numbers proposed by some historians. The author (in citing one minor source) also fails to respond to the criticisms of Sir Richard Burton and those almost identical ones of Orlando Patterson (who fails, however, to indicate his reliance on that noted bigot) on Mungo Park's reliability. However, such a response is readily available in Kate Ferguson Marsters' Introduction to Park's TRAVELS IN THE INTERIOR DISTRICTS OF AFRICA. Thomas also fails to explain why he differs with Bovill on the exact relationship of the Sanhaja and the Tuareg. All-in-all; however, these are minor points and hardly detract from the incredible depth, breadth, organization and vividness of this masterful work!

Nine Months
By I. Ranovos
Arghhhh! This book took me nine months to get through! Still, this super-detailed, eye-opening account of the slave trade should be required reading for every high school senior in the world. I was suprised not only by the culpability of the Africans themselves but by that of Hume, Swift, Voltaire...the greatest champions of liberty our civilization has known! I can't believe I didn't know this stuff!
I hope there will be a second edition that takes us up to the slavery currently going on in Mauritania and the Sudan.

Well-written, detailed book on the slave trade
By A Customer
Thomas has written a detailed, comprehensive portrait of the slave trade. He emphasizes the perspective of the slave traders, rather than the slaves. He stresses the earlier, European roots, over the earlier Muslim traders, although he does not ignore the Arab and Moorish traders. He seems to focus a little more on the European than the American traders, but there is plenty of coverage of the latter.
One of the strengths and weaknesses of the book is its voice, which is clinically detached from the material. I would expect this informative, but cool voice in a study of cotton trading. At times, Thomas' distance disarms the reader, but more often it facilitates the reader's access to this centuries-old, horrific business.
Thomas indirectly addresses the question why England so quickly converted its national policy on slave trading. He portrays several individuals who worked long, hard, and seemingly against the odds for the abolition of slave trading, if not slavery itself, but I still wonder how this policy seems to have gained such widespread acceptance among those naval officers on whom fell the duty of enforcement. I would have appreciated more insights into their feelings about slave trading and naval interdiction.
The length of the book probably did not permit the enlargement of its scope, but the reader seeking the slave's point of view may not be satisfied. Largely drawing from The Life of Olaudah Equiano, Thomas explains that there was little literature on which he could rely for this perspective.
The book is well written and seems well researched. I most appreciated Thomas' quanitification of the enormity of the slave trade without overwhelming me with statistics. I wouldn't call it a page-turner, but I had trouble putting it down.

A Great Find
By teammine
This book (and many others like it) have been a great find for my family. I am homeschooling a second-grader and these books have been the key to getting him interested in reading, and have become the foundation of our reading curriculum this year. Since we are studying American history, they are relevant, fun, and are about topics to which he can relate. His interest in both reading and history has increased, and he can't wait to get to the next book. At this point level 3 readers are easy for him, level 4 readers are just hard enough to be a challenge (but not too much) and level 5 readers will be tackled in the spring.

Thomas Jefferson's Feast is great because you get to know the everyday T.J. and things that he liked. We found out that he was responsible for introducing things to this continent that we really love such as tomatoes and macaroni and cheese. My son loved the story.

This book is great paired up with "A Prairie Dog for the President" about the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Terrific Book!
By Lynn Ellingwood
This is a wonderful children's book about our third president (US). It provides a fun story about how he loved to read and write and eat! He brought foods back from France that weren't popular here and made them famous. Jefferson got people to finally try love apples or tomatos, thought to be poisonous here in the US, but eaten often in France.

The book is great for what it is
By Melissa J. Newman
All of the books in this series take one personality trait of a famous person and talk about it. The trait they chose for Jefferson was that he liked to eat. The fact that the "feast" happened over several parties as opposed to one meal is not an important enough piece of "fiction" to justify saying that the book is bad. The book does not talk about Slavery. That is covered in the book about Harriett Tubman, which is also a very good book. This is a Step Into Reading book, not a complete history of Thomas Jefferson book. Although the reading level is 2nd - 4th grade, the content is PreK - 1st.

Pumped for Murder
By Lou Allin
Wonder what Canadians do during long, dark winter nights? Plot murders, of course. In yet another entertaining anthology, the Ladies' Killing Circle links rage and revenge with recreation and games. FIT TO DIE features twenty-five selections of fiction spiced with a few tasty poems from a stellar writing stable. Every story engages from paragraph one, Spandexed teens, middle-aged-spread battlers, and galloping grannies at the bridge table, in the exercise room, on the tai chi field or golf course. Try not to read on after these openings: "All the time I was washing pots in the kitchen at Kingston Pen, I was playing golf in my head" or "On our last Tuesday Scrabble night, Mrs. D handed me a sealed lavender envelope and asked me to keep it, 'in case.' Two days later she was dead."
Crime doyenne Mary Jane Maffini weighs in with "Sign of the Times," a gentrification tale which pits neighbour against neighbour, with graffiti artists lurking in the bushes and an ancient dog named Silent Sam. Her consummate talent for the right voice tucks the reader inside the head of a retired art teacher who finds a deadly canvas. Barbara Fradkin, child psychologist, in "Double Trouble" creates a young male persona with aplomb and travels to the hiking hills of Wales, using a darkly-adapted eye reminiscent of Patricia Highsmith's. A coincidence that both leads are named Patrick? H. Mel Malton plants tongue in cheek in a laugh-out-loud romp called "Love Handles." Her likable chubby heroine digs in her heels and her spoon as her obnoxious boyfriend drags her into his fitness craze, choosing "grey hued bean soups and drab green salads like mouldy lace, no dressing" over her "Dijon Chicken with Apricot-Basil Sauce." It's hard not to flag every entry in this collection, but if any story chills to the bone and back, it is R.J. Harlick's "Seigneur Poisson," set in the Quebec wilderness in the middle of a blizzard. Leaving the cozy farmhouse, the "red blur of the barn" behind, stung by driving snow, icy mitts covering his nose, Jacques marches stiffened boots toward a frozen lake in search of his grandfather, ice fishing with the family skeleton, the sinister Hippolyte. The pulse rises with each step as a foregone conclusion bites the heart. The best part of FIT TO DIE is the three other criminous anthologies which precede it.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Wisdom of the Kadam Masters (Tibetan Classics)From Wisdom Publications

Wisdom of the Kadam Masters is the second volume in the Tibetan Classics series, which aims to make available accessible paperback editions of key Tibetan Buddhist works drawn from Wisdom Publications' Library of Tibetan Classics.

The phrase "Kadam masters" evokes for many Tibetans a sense of a spiritual golden age--the image of a community of wise yet simple monks devoted to a life of mental cultivation. These eleventh- and twelfth-century masters were particularly famed for their pithy spiritual sayings that captured essential teachings in digestible bites. In these sayings one unmistakably detects a clear understanding of what comprises a truly happy life, one that is grounded in a deep concern for the welfare of others.

Like the Sayings of the Desert Fathers, Lao Tzu, or Rumi, the teachings contained in Wisdom of the Kadam Masters can be approached as a part of the wisdom heritage of mankind, representative of the long history of the long human quest to understand our existence and its meaning. This volume offers some of the most beloved teachings of the Tibetan tradition.

Review
"Thupten Jinpa shines as an interpreter of classical Buddhism for our times. In Wisdom of the Kadam Masters he shows how these pithy sayings from long ago offer anyone sound principles for living a meaningful, fulfilling, and happy life." (Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence)

"Geshe Thupten Jinpa is one of the foremost interpreters of Tibetan Buddhism for the modern world, and each of his translations of Tibetan classics as well as books by His Holiness the Dalai Lama is a jewel. With his classic Buddhist monastic training culminating in his earning the coveted Geshe Lharam degree and his superb Western education culminating in his doctorate in religious studies from Cambridge University, he brings an unparalleled depth of vision to the significance of Buddhism in the modern world. With the greatest respect, I recommend this latest volume of his marvelous translations of the wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism." (B. Alan Wallace, president, Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies)

From chapter 3

Again Shawopa said: “As for us, the desires of this life are what bring the sufferings of this and future lives, so we should shun the things that attachment to this mundane life craves. When the objectives of this life’s desire are extensive, our mind lacks peace; we wander everywhere, and in the course of this, all three factors—negative karma, suffering, and ill fame—strike simultaneously. We must, therefore, relinquish this multipronged mind of desire. When we succeed in turning away the mind of desire, that is when joy and happiness starts.

We seek happiness in this and throughout all lives, and so, as a sign of this, neither crave for anything in your heart nor hoard anything.
When you do not crave for gifts, this is the best gift.
When you do not crave for praise, this is the best praise.
When you do not crave for fame, this is the best fame.
When you do not crave for retinues, this is the best retinue.

“If you would practice the Dharma from your heart, point the tip of your mind to the life of a beggar. Ensure this life of a beggar to the end by being able to enter death.
“If you are able to cultivate this kind of attitude, it is certain you will not be susceptible to distress caused by any of the three—gods, ghosts, and humans. If, on the other hand, you seek to quench the thirst of the desires of this life, things like the following will happen: you will disgrace yourself; you will create your own miseries; others will ridicule you, while you yourself will be miserable; and, in the future, you will depart to the lower realms.
“Therefore, if you abandon broadcasting [your good deeds], adopt humility, relinquish desire, forsake all non-Dharma activities, and strive well in the meditative practices, the following things will happen: you will be happy and others will admire you, and in the future, you will attain enlightenment. In brief, if on our part, we initiate all kinds of endeavors, know all sorts of things, engage in all kinds of deeds, and however much we might say, as long as our thoughts are not turned away from the desires of this life, we have no means of gaining the happiness of both this and future lives. If our thoughts are turned against all forms of desire, we no longer need to search for happiness.”

***

Again, the spiritual mentor Shawopa said:

Be not like those who, while failing to gain autonomy themselves, seek to control others;
not like those who, while lacking higher qualities within their mental continuums, aspire to be others’ master;
not like those who, despite possessing great faith, fail to refrain from negative karma;
not like those who, while admiring emptiness, possess excessive self-grasping;
not like those who, despite having great intelligence, fail to recognize what is Dharma and what is not Dharma;
not like those who, despite having sharp intelligence, fail to understand the teachings;
not like those who, while refraining from slight negative deeds, fail to shy away from grave ones;
not like those who, while having great altruistic motives, fail to avoid harming others;
not like those who cannot live alone and are incapable of being in the company of others;
not like those who, while desiring to be disciplined, have little endurance;
not like those who, while being very generous in the short term, have little flexibility deep down;
not like those whose teachings are high but whose realizations are low;
not like those whose masters are excellent but whose behavior is bad;
not like those who, while delighting in the study of the teachings, dislike implementing them;
not like those who, while desiring solitude, delight in socializing with others;
not like those who, while desiring excellence, remain beset with extreme greed;
not like those who, while aspiring for liberation, have whatever they do slide into the eight mundane concerns.

***

Again, the spiritual mentor Shawopa chastised himself:

You confounded one—who yearns for the high teachings for his inferior mentality!
You old mind—who hopes for improvement to occur while he does not improve himself!
You heartless one—who acts as if the Dharma were important for others and negative karma for himself!
You distorted one—who assigns appropriate acts to others and inappropriate conduct to himself!
You who resembles a steep slope of clumps of earth—who has greater negative growth than positive growth!
You expert in contraction—who is elaborate in his promises but brief in implementation!
You of wrong livelihood—who seeks the afflictions and pretends to apply their remedies!
You who are laden with hopes and fear—who hopes others see his qualities and fears others seeing his faults!
You who seeks victory over Dharma colleagues while accepting loss from relatives!
You who seeks victory over the antidotes while accepting loss from the camp of the afflictions!
You who seeks victory in this life while accepting loss in the future lives!
You who seeks victory from those who perpetrate harm while accepting loss from those who bring benefits!
You who fails to understand that causing harm to others also causes harm to yourself!
You who fails to understand that helping others also helps yourself!
You who fails to understand that harm and suffering are conditions favorable to Dharma practice!
You who fails to understand that desire and happiness are obstacles to Dharma practice!
You who, while proclaiming the importance of Dharma practice to others, does not act in accord with the Dharma yourself!
You who, while despising others for committing negative acts, fails to curtail your own ongoing negative deeds!
You who, while failing to detect your own grave shortcomings, detects even the slightest faults of others!
You who curtails your altruistic deeds when no reward is forthcoming!
You who cannot bear to see other practitioners being offered gifts and honor!
You who loves the high and is hostile toward the weak!
You who dislikes tales pertaining to the next life!
You who loses your temper when others correct your flaws!
You who, while hoping others detect your virtues, do not allow others to become aware of your negative karma!
You who is content when your external behavior is good even when your inner thoughts remain base!
You who regards the pursuit of material things and objects of desire as joy and happiness!
You who, while failing to search for happiness within, searches for it on the outside!
You who, while having pledged to follow in the footsteps of the Buddha, follows after those of the worldly!
You who, while consulting the bodhisattvas, treasures items for sale in the hells!
You who, while dedicating your body, resources, and virtues of the three times to sentient beings, fails to let go “I” and “self”!
You who fails to understand that the affection of negative friends is the precursor of doom!
You who fails to understand that the anger of virtuous friends is a source of benefit—
Because you’ll waste so much time on “what is” and “what is not,” do not indulge in chatter with others.
Because it will lead to the proliferation of craving, do not reign over a kingdom in your mind.
Because there is greater risk than profit, do not delight in making promises.
Because this will necessarily undermine your virtuous activities, give up excessive chores.

Relating these chastisements to his heart, Shawopa offered such counsel.
