Long time coming, but not as good as I'd hoped.
By Philip T Burchell
It is surprising that no-one had published a book on the Steadicam before now. Even this one has been a long time coming. Italian author Serena Ferrara originally published this in 1997, and it was finally released this year in an English version. A Doctorate in "History & Cinema" and her curiosity about the Steadicam led her to write a thesis on the subject, which later became this book.
After a brief but well written overview of the history, types and function of camera movement, the book does an excellent job documenting the invention of the Steadicam … the evolution from first prototype to current models is shown in detail. This first section of the book covers basic principles of how the thing works, how it can be used together with it’s limitations, and gives early examples from films such as "Rocky" and "Marathon Man". The Steadicam didn’t really come of age until it was embraced by Stanley Kubrick on "The Shining" which is discussed at length.
The second section is called "Semiotics and Narrative" and leads into chapters such as "The Gaze of the Narrative Voice". Overall, there is a tendency to intellectualise, and this section in particular was a bit too bookish for me. However, many references to sources of information are given, along with an extensive bibliography, so perhaps this style can be forgiven.
The third section holds a series of interviews which is perhaps the most valuable contribution of the book. Inventor and master operator Garrett Brown naturally features, along with an excellent discussion by Larry McConkey on his extended shots in "Goodfellas" and "Bonfire of the Vanities" and with DP’s Haskell Wexler and Vittorio Storaro among others.
The book however, is limited by it’s concentration of the evolution of the Steadicam as a brand. From 1993, Garrett Brown’s original patents started to expire, allowing competitive manufacturers into the field. The most prominent of these, the PRO, is given scant recognition, others none at all, while the Panaglide ...is perhaps given more than it deserves. Important equipment such as remote lens controllers, gyro’s and antlers hardly rate a mention. Even Cinema Products’ own innovative "iso-elastic" arm is given little attention. The fact that CP went belly-up last year and the Steadicam product was acquired by Tiffen, is a glaring omission in itself.
Other grumbles? Not enough photo’s of the thing in action was a big disappointment, and many that do appear are 10-15 years out of date. The Techniques and Uses section of the book could also be much stronger ....
For those with no working knowledge or experience with a Steadicam, for students of film or for those intrigued and want to know more about Steadicam and camera work in general, this book really can’t be overlooked. It is an important addition to the recent record of cinematography, and adds some valuable insights into the Steadicam’s usefulness as a tool.

Fear of God and the Beginning of Wisdom: The School of Nisibis and the Development of Scholastic Culture in Late Antique Mesopotamia (Divin

The School of Nisibis was the main intellectual center of the Church of the East in the sixth and early seventh centuries C.E. and an institution of learning unprecedented in antiquity. Fear of God and the Beginning of Wisdom provides a history both of the School and of the scholastic culture of the Church of the East more generally in the late antique and early Islamic periods. Adam H. Becker examines the ideological and intellectual backgrounds of the school movement and reassesses the evidence for the supposed predecessor of the School of Nisibis, the famed School of the Persians of Edessa. Furthermore, he argues that the East-Syrian ("Nestorian") school movement is better understood as an integral and at times contested part of the broader spectrum of East-Syrian monasticism.

Becker examines the East-Syrian culture of ritualized learning, which flourished at the same time and in the same place as the famed Babylonian Rabbinic academies. Jews and Christians in Mesopotamia developed similar institutions aimed at inculcating an identity in young males that defined them as beings endowed by their creator with the capacity to study. The East-Syrian schools are the most significant contemporary intellectual institutions immediately comparable to the Rabbinic academies, even as they served as the conduit for the transmission of Greek philosophical texts and ideas to Muslims in the early 'Abbasid period.

Review

"Adam Becker brings together work in two different linguistic areas, Syriac and Greek, which are usually conducted separately. Since the period dealt with is a time of transition from the ancient to Medieval world, one of immense significance for the subsequent history of both the Middle East and Europe, it is particularly helpful to have a book that shows how these two geographical worlds were intimately linked from a cultural point of view prior to the political separation brought about by the Arab conquests in the seventh century."—Sebastian Brock, Oxford University

Adam H. Becker teaches classics and religious studies at New York University. He is coeditor, with Annette Yoshiko Reed, of The Ways that Never Parted: Jews and Christians from Late Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages.

An important ancient institution examined from multiple perspectives
By Paul Stevenson
What is involved in the study of an ancient institution of learning? Quite a lot, actually. For starters: religion, philosophy, sociology and languages. The very use of the English word "school" immediately brings to our minds a whole set of expectations: buildings, teachers, students, subjects studied, etc. However, in order to understand the "School" of Nisibis, we need to set aside modern expectations and examine what ancient documents themselves tell us about the institution in question.

No physical remains of this school have been found, so literary sources are the only ones we have. The most important source for information on the School of Nisibis is a document known as the "Cause of the Foundation of the Schools" written by a man named Barhadbshabba ('son of Sunday') around the year 600 CE. Adam Becker draws on this and other sources in an attempt to understand the nature of this institution and its place in the Church and society in which it was established.

While Becker's book is well written, it is not an easy read, because the range and complexity of the subjects to be dealt with is quite broad. They include East Syriac Christianity, Syriac proto-monasticism, Egyptian monasticism, Greek, Roman, Jewish and Islamic institutions of learning, Aristotelian logic, Neoplatonic philosophy, notions of the nature of pedagogy, the sociology and politics of Sasanian Persia, Alexandrian and Antiochean scriptural exegesis, specific ancient theologians such as Ephrem of Nisibis and Theodore of Mopsuestia, and on and on. No one person, of course, can be an authority on this vast array of subjects. But Becker, a historian, has brought together many strands in order to provide points of entry to scholars in several fields, including history, Syriac studies, ecclesiology and philosophy.

The "Cause" document sees pedagogy as beginning in heaven, when God taught the angels. Pedagogy has continued throughout human history. The School of Nisibis was intended to be an earthly establishment where this divine pedagogy could be carried on. After completing a course of study which included everything from basic literacy through advanced scriptural exegesis (strictly following the approach of Theodore of Mopsuestia), graduates of the school could go on to found new schools, teach in existing schools, move up in the ecclesiastical hierarchy or, alternatively, join a monastery and work toward eventually becoming solitary monks.

Well, this review is already getting long and it feels like it has barely begun. I will wrap it up by giving the book's table of contents:

1. Divine Pedagogy and the Transmission of the Knowledge of God: The Discursive Background of the School Movement
2. The School of the Persians (Part 1): Rereading the Sources
3. The School of the Persians (Part 2): From Ethnic Circle to Theological School
4. The School of Nisibis
5. The Scholastic Genre: The Cause of the Foundation of the Schools
6. The Reception of Theodore of Mopsuestia in the School of Nisibis
7. Spelling God's Name with the Letters of Creation: The Use of Neoplatonic Aristotle in the Cause
8. A Typology of East-Syrian Schools
9. The Monastic Context of the East-Syrian School Movement
Conclusion: Study as Ritual in the Church of the East

Note:
The key text for this study, the "Cause of the Foundation of the Schools," is available in English translation, along with other relevant documents, in a separate book only recently published by Becker: Sources for the Study of the School of Nisibis (Liverpool University Press - Translated Texts for Historians). The volumes of the Liverpool series are, happily, very reasonably priced.

The The Intellectuals and the Masses: Pride and Prejudice Among the Literary Intelligentsia 1880-1939, by John Carey

Professor John Carey shows how early twentieth-century intellectuals imagined the 'masses' as semi-human swarms, drugged by popular newspapers and cinema, and ripe for extermination. Exposing the revulsion from common humanity in George Bernard Shaw, Ezra Pound, D. H. Lawrence, E. M. Forster, Virginia Woolf, H. G. Wells, Aldous Huxley, W. B. Yeats and other canonized writers, he relates this to the cult of the Nietzschean Superman, which found its ultimate exponent in Hitler.

Carey's assault on the founders of modern culture caused consternation throughout the artistic and academic establishments when it was first published in 1992.

From Publishers Weekly
This scathing critique argues that modernist literature and art arose as a reaction against popular culture and the mass reading public created by late 19th-century educational reforms. Oxford Enlgish professor Carey shows how intellectuals like D. H. Lawrence, Ezra Pound, W. B. Yeats, Knut Hamsun, George Gissing and Wyndham Lewis scorned "the masses" as vulgar and trivial while exalting the artist as a natural aristocrat and transmitter of timeless values. T. S. Eliot predicted that the spread of education would lead to barbarism. Charles Baudelaire condemned photography as a distraction for the "vile multitude," while other intellectuals expressed contempt for newspapers and popular entertainments. H. G. Wells proposed measures to restrict parenthood as a means to curb the "black and brown races" whom he considered inferior to whites. Carey's razor-sharp analysis is an antidote to snobbery and class prejudice in all forms.

From Library Journal
Carey (English, Oxford Univ.) contends that the modernist literature of some prominent English authors writing from the 1880s through 1939 was a hostile reaction to the newly educated mass reading public and its popular culture. These writings were in styles designed to exclude semiliterate readers and buttress the self-esteem of literary intellectuals as part of a natural aristocracy. After World War II, confronted by television and other popular media, intellectuals were driven to create other literary modes to shield high culture from the reach of the majority. Separate chapters on George Gissing, H.G. Wells, Arnold Bennett, and Wyndham Lewis reinforce Carey's general thesis. Published last year in England, this is a closely reasoned and stimulating discussion. Recommended for academic libraries and large public libraries.

From Kirkus Reviews
The obscurities of modern art and literature, according to Carey (English/Oxford; John Donne, 1981), were devised by the intelligentsia to exclude the new reading public for whom they had contempt--a thesis that Carey applies here to, among others, George Gissing, H.G. Wells, Arnold Bennett, and Wyndham Lewis. Nietzsche, Yeats, Shaw, Flaubert, Ibsen, Ortega y Gasset, E.M. Forster, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce--indeed the entire modernist movement, says Carey, depicted the ``masses'' and the popular culture they generated with disdain. These writers, the author contends, worshiped the lofty, isolated, high-minded artist who produced an alienating art without human or narrative content to which the masses could relate. Followers of Freud, the intelligentsia feared crowds and condemned their suburban refuges as culturally impoverished ecological disasters. Gissing concluded that the masses were ineducable, while Wells considered them manifestations of a ``biological catastrophe.'' Meanwhile, Bennett, the ``hero'' of Carey's study, believed that the people could be redeemed through the study of literature, although Wyndham Lewis- -whom Carey compares to Hitler--felt that the democracy they believed in was effeminate. The author attempts to demonstrate how Mein Kampf was firmly rooted in the intelligentsia's orthodoxy--and how the incineration of Jews was an extension of it. Members of The intelligentsia, he says, believed that they formed a natural aristocracy united by an esoteric body of knowledge that protected them from the herd. Concluding with a chilling analogy, Carey suggests that the influence and style of the turn-of-the-century intelligentsia survives in the obfuscations of contemporary criticism. Provocative, courageous, certainly stimulating--and reflecting a profound understanding of the often invisible yet potentially insidious relationship between aesthetics and politics, as well as of how art can be used to camouflage the most repugnant ideas. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. The Writer As Totalitarian Snob
By R. W. Rasband
John Carey's "The Intellectuals and the Masses" is an eye-opening account of the fear and loathing many English writers had for ordinary people during the early days of Modernism. The intellectuals of the time hated and feared the growing power of the newly expanding middle class. Many famous and prominent writers came to dislike democracy and capitalism, because they thought they were losing influence. Carey theorizes that Modernism was invented in order to shut out the common reader of the day; to prove the elite's superiority and to put the upstarts in their places. Wyndham Lewis, a man with an amoral personal life, worshipped Hitler. D.H. Lawrence noted the efficiency of poison gas and imagined a large execution chamber where all the stupid people could be killed. Virginia Woolf sneered at the banality of the conversations she overheard from the women in the lavatory. The Bloomsbury set was especially guilty of the worst class-consciousness.
Some writers did battle with their impulses and the intellectual fashions of those years. George Orwell wrote with a minimum on condescension about "the proles" in his early novels and "1984." H.G. Wells seemed to advocate mass extermination of his inferiors in his non-fiction, but in his fiction his imaginative sympathies were usually with the failures and "losers" of the world. James Joyce's masterpiece was "Ulysses", a tribute of sorts to the common man (although written in a Modernist style that made it impossible for the common man to read it.) But on the whole the snobbery of most of the intellectuals of the day was unforgivable.
This book is an excellent companion to Modris Eksteins' "Rites of Spring" his cultural history of World War I. Both books argue that Modernism was in part responsible for the horrors of the 20th century, with its ruthless elitism and emotional coldness. Shaw, Pound and Forster dreamed of ridding the world of "superfluous" people; did this make it possible for Hitler and Stalin to actually attempt it? The necessary ideas were in the air. And they still are. Carey notes that, as the masses began to catch up in sophistication, post-modernism and literary theory was invented to create a new elite artistic language for its aristocrtatic initiates to revel in. The Modernist loathing for the mass media of newspapers was replaced by hatred of television and America, the middle-class nation par excellance. (And I would add, they really hate the Internet.) If you want to know why so many celebrities seem so sour and cynical about everything but themselves, read this book.

the murderous roots of snobbery unearthed
By PARTHO ROY
Strange to think that a well-chaired professor at Oxford, that ancient bastion of academic elitism (still, despite the sun setting on its hallowed but crumbling halls), would have so much criticism to level against the dawn of modern intellegentsia. But upon reading the first part of this concise and well-documented book, it became clear to me just how rotten at heart our intellectual heroes truly were. Carey finds a wealth of unnerving evidence that the great figures (self-appointed "greats," as this book shows us) of the modern literary canon festered with hatred of the common man, so much that they advocated (oftentimes straightforwardly) wiping out all of humanity. Moreso, the various case studies in the book's second part uncover further details about just how much these great writers loathed the "masses," and the strange, selfish reasons behind their disdain.
This is an excellent read for anyone struggling through "Ulysses," "To the Lighthouse," or even "The Wasteland." Carey's thorough research and well-argued points shed much-needed light on the dark side of our past century's most celebrated authors: why they wrote in such an unreachable voice, why they crafted their themes to be so alien to most people, why they lived where they did, and (most importantly) how much worthier they took themselves as human beings. I did groan a bit during the final chapter, which was about Wyndham Lewis and Hitler. Dropping the "H-bomb" can make anything seem evil and was therefore too easy a potshot for Carey to take at the intellectuals. Also, the two back-to-back case studies on H. G. Wells were somewhat redundant; Carey would have done better to write two case studies on two separate writers. Still, this book gives the reader an exciting, enlightening, and shocking view at the world of the intellectuals between 1880 and 1939 (and, in the Postscript, a look at similar currents in today's postmodern world), and I highly recommend it to any fan of modern literature who is not afraid to explore the ugly side of the great writers.

An Important, Much-Needed Book
By Gordon Burkowski
This book does an excellent job of showing the links between elitist, obscurantist art, political elitism and the pervasive contempt for popular culture which still infects much of the intelligentsia today. Especially interesting are the sections where Carey shows how much of this arose from panic on the part of many intellectuals at the burgeoning populations in the major Europeans countries.

I note that some reviewers regard Carey's documentation of the broad appeal of fascism among pre-WW II intellectuals as a cheap shot rather than a serious point. This is both fallacious and unhistorical. Those who enjoy their literary works might like to forget T.S. Eliot's anti-semitism (which is why After Strange Gods has never been reprinted), or to skate past Ezra Pound's pro-Fascist sympathies. But both were typical of their time. It's understandable that many authors who flourished in those days were anxious, post Auschwitz, to forget a lot of the things they said before 1939; and many of those who like the work of such authors would also like to forget words that praise eugenics and idolize political figures like Mussolini. But such things were said by some of our most respected poets, novelists and thinkers - and it is an injustice to pretend that they were not. The Great Silence on this matter must end.

Carey's book is a first step towards explaining why there has been so profound a disconnect over the past hundred years between intellectual elites and the broader reading and thinking public - a disconnect that thinkers in the middle years of the nineteenth century would have found shocking and almost incredible. Let us hope that others will follow in his footsteps.

Blurring the Boundaries: Explorations to the Fringes of NonfictionFrom University of Nebraska Press

Contemporary discussions on nonfiction are often riddled with questions about the boundaries between truth and memory, honesty and artifice, facts and lies.  Just how much truth is in nonfiction?  How much is a lie? Blurring the Boundaries sets out to answer such questions while simultaneously exploring the limits of the form.

This collection features twenty genre-bending essays from today’s most renowned teachers and writers—including original work from Michael Martone, Marcia Aldrich, Dinty W. Moore, Lia Purpura, and Robin Hemley, among others. These essays experiment with structure, style, and subject matter, and each is accompanied by the writer’s personal reflection on the work itself, illuminating his or her struggles along the way. As these innovative writers stretch the limits of genre, they take us with them, offering readers a front-row seat to an ever-evolving form.

Readers also receive a practical approach to craft thanks to the unique writing exercises provided by the writers themselves. Part groundbreaking nonfiction collection, part writing reference, Blurring the Boundaries serves as the ideal book for literary lovers and practitioners of the craft.

Great Premise. Great Collection.
By Jorge Luis Borges
A welcome update to John D'Agata's The Next American Essay (2003), B.J. Hollars has assembled an illuminating collection of genre bending essays. I'm planning on using Blurring the Boundaries in my upper division nonfiction workshop this fall. The book features a reflection by each essayist on their piece (the reflections sometimes rivaling the actual essays!) and thoughtful writing exercises in the back. As with all anthologies, some works are stronger than others, but anyone interested in craft, form, and word play should find a great deal to work with here.

A very useful book of essays with a discussion by the author of this anthology. I would have eliminated one but I have not read every essay thus far. The essays are meant to teach non fiction writing students. It is an excellent guide.

But now the unthinkable is happening: The ancient wards securing the barrier between order and mayhem have begun to erode—and generations of bloodthirsty, monstrous creatures, fueled by a rage thousands of years in the making, are poised to spill forth, seeking revenge for what was done to them.

Young Elf Arling Elessedil possesses the enchanted means to close the breach and once more seal the denizens of the Forbidding in their prison. But when she falls into the hands of the powerful Federation’s diabolical Prime Minister, her efforts may be doomed. Only her determined sister, Aphen, who bears the Elfstones and commands their magic, has any hope of saving Arling from the hideous fate her captor has in store.

Meanwhile, Railing Ohmsford—desperate to save his imprisoned brother—seeks to discover if his famed but ill-fated ancestor Grianne is still alive and willing to help him save the world . . . no matter the odds or the consequences.

BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Terry Brooks's The High Druid's Blade.

From Booklist
Witch Wraith is the final book in Brooks’ Dark Legacy of Shannara trilogy and a title that will be a mainstay in the public library’s fantasy collection. Wards of Faerie, Bloodfire Quest, and Witch Wraith are set 100 years after the events of Brooks’ High Druid of Shannara trilogy. The magical barrier that keeps the people who live in the Four Lands safe from the most evil and dangerous creatures is crumbling, and horrific revenging acts, thousands of years in the making, seem inevitable. The young Elf Arling can seal this barrier, but she has been brought under the control of the diabolical prime minster, making her efforts impossible. Her sister, Aphen, may be the only one who can save Arling and the fate of their world. For the first time in his career, the New York Times best-selling author Brooks is publishing each book in this trilogy just six months apart, ensuring readers will be clamoring for this conclusion of the Shannara universe story. --Alison Downs

let down by this book.....
By L Keeling
I waited and waited for this book to release and as soon as I got it, I started reading. All the quests going on, I thought for sure this was going to be great. Then it got to the parts I thought were supposed to be "epic"...and it just started going down hill. The first battle at Arishaig was indeed written nicely and I loved it. The battle at Arborlon, not so much. It was like oh yea super battle...blah blah blah skip skip skip...and done. When everyone meets up at the final stage, it was like oh hey, haven't seen you in awhile and BYE. Seriously, it was like my child telling a story when he is in trouble and leaving out all the details he thinks will get him in trouble. Redden's coma deal at the end...what was that? Also, what happened to everyone else? Did the once fierce and level headed Aphen turned whiney 5 year old go back to the Druids? What about all the other major support characters? Anything? Honestly, I am still mad at the ending of this book. The last what 50 pages make me want to scream. Having read all of the Shannara series and supporting books, I felt this was just a newer version of some of the older books. I love Terry Brooks, but this wasn't something I would recommend to anyone. Having said all this, someone will love it, someone will like it, and someone will hate it; it is just the matter of opinions.

New Low for Brooks
By Matt Tureck
I don't know if his books are ghostwritten now, or if he's just gotten really lazy, but this is yet another paint-by-numbers Shannara book.
No characters that aren't carbon copies of previous characters.
No plots that aren't recycled.
I loved his books for years, but i think I'm done at this point.

One great section (barely) saves the book for me
By D. Brennan
Spoiler alert

Finally! I picked up the third book of this trilogy ready for epic battles, resolution to the many plot lines and some grit. Witch Wraith should have concluded the Dark Legacy of Shannara series with a bang; after all the monsters are free from their centuries long prison and, driven by their dark lord, descend upon human and elf with unmatched ferocity. Our main characters are out and about on their various quests - bring life back to the Elchris which maintains the Forbidding, rescue a brother by resurrecting a witch, etc... Wait, I just used 'etc' in a book review. Does that mean the writing was a little formulaic and maybe a bit predictable...? Well...

If I sound less than excited about this book it is because I found some of the story a little too reminiscent of previous Shannara books. Terry Brooks even goes so far as to hang a lantern on that obvious problem, pointing out that 'history repeats itself'. Well, I guess that's one possibility. Another explanation would be that the author didn't have any exciting new ideas and went with the tried and true. Couldn't Brooks at least pick a different room for the changeling reveal? Could the druids actually win a battle when their fortress is besieged? Why win - we'll just release the guardian once most of us are dead and it will kill the invaders...

I also found the resurrection of the Elchris to be a disappointingly flat ending. Here we are - all out war between elves and the monsters; the dwarf army is arriving to support the elves and other allies are(hopefully) on the way; the elves are now in possession of the elfstones giving them a HUGE military boost; the main heroes are all in one place; there was a major change in enemy leadership; the Witch Wraith and her awesome magical powers is leading the monster charge, and the excitement is building.... And then....

The Elchris gets sorted out and everything is over... fizzle

Why?

At the end of the story, what has really changed.
- The druid order has been smashed (yet again) - does this make the 3rd, or 4th time this has happened? Whatever the count, this is a tired plot device.
- A few main characters have had personal life changes - getting the really hot girlfriend is fun but not epic in the true sense of the word.
- A few supporting characters die - druid deaths don't count as they usually die off anyway
- A human city gets sacked

Other than that, not much is changed. The BIG issues are back to status quo as the Forbidding is back in place and the elfstones are gone (again). There is, in effect, no resolution to the major points of the whole series.

The story therefore amounts, in the end, to a bunch of people running around on various missions, with the end result being nothing accomplished at some measure of personal suffering. Hmm. Maybe that works for some readers but I prefer to see some motion - forward or back - in the stories I read.

I give it 3 stars because of the very well written battle of Arishaig. Brooks did a great job of detailing the battle in a way that was both exciting and extended. This was by far and away my favorite part of the book. I just wish that this approach was taken to the battle of Arborlon. I changed my review of the first novel to a 2-star rating. Better to not start reading this series only to be disappointed with the lame ending.

Jazz...Jazzy?
By Stacey
I wouldn't say this book was Jazzy. It was a great book, yes, but I'm used to the likes of Stephen King, who can make me stay up until I can't hold my eyes open anymore, just because I can't put the book down. This book WAS good, don't get me wrong, and it certainly made the impression upon me that bonds between a woman and her friend are almost unbreakable, but I almost had to force myself to keep reading. It's an easy read, but the pace is slow. So, good job, Toni, but it's not a King.

Could help Faulkner understand his own work
By Marques Bracci
This fine interpretation should be used by any person who endeavors to understand the body of Faulkner's work. I daresay even old W.F. himself would have benefited from reading this text. I only wish I had had assistance like this when I was in school.
