Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich Theologie - Sonstiges, Note: 1,3, Universität Kassel (Ev. Theologie / Religionspädagogik), Veranstaltung: Last minute.

Parks brings a powerful African American female perspective to contemporary avant-garde theater--or perhaps it's the other way around. This volume covers her career from its beginning in the mid-1980s up to 1994. All the works are audacious. Black history, black culture and the supernatural collide in The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World. In The America Play, a black man travels the U.S. reenacting the assassination of Abraham Lincoln over and over, as other characters try to extricate themselves from the giant pit of history (and to figure out how they got into it). This volume includes the euphoniously titled Imperceptible Mutabilities in the Third Kingdom, Betting on the Dust Commander, Pickling, and Devotees in the Garden of Love.

About the Author
One of the contemporary American theater's most innovative wordsmiths. Her plays include: Topdog/Underdog (2002 Pulitzer Prize for Drama), In the Blood (2000 Pulitzer-nominee), Fucking A, Venus (OBIE Award), The America Play and Imperceptible Mutabilities in the Third Kingdom (OBIE Award, Best New American Play). She is also a screenwriter, novelist, and MacArthur "Genius" grantee.

Great. Full of vivid imagery, very creative.

This book contains plays written by Suzan-Lori Parks. I had to read this for a class, and we dived deep into the metaphors, language, and imagery. It is a very interesting read, full of dynamic. It really stretches your imagination.

Complex and Radical
By Destiny
This is one of those books that changed the way I thought. It has stuck with me as one of the most amazing books I've encountered. I started reading it because the title play was assigned in my "Modern Tragedy and Metatheater" class... but I ended up reading the whole thing cover to cover because I'd never encountered anything like it. Parks has such a gift with language--and she uses that gift to tackle important and complex subject matter in radical new ways.

I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in post-modernism, theater (meta-theater in particular), or oppression studies.

Alliterative Revivals (The Middle Ages Series), by Christine Chism

Alliterative Revivals is the first full-length study of the sophisticated historical consciousness of late medieval alliterative romance. Drawing from historicism, feminism, performance studies, and postcolonial theory, Christine Chism argues that these poems animate British history by reviving and acknowledging potentially threatening figures from the medieval past—pagan judges, primeval giants, Greek knights, Jewish forefathers, Egyptian sorcerers, and dead ancestors. In addressing the ways alliterative poems centralize history—the dangerous but profitable commerce of the present with the past—Chism's book shifts the emphasis from the philological questions that have preoccupied studies of alliterative romance and offers a new argument about the uses of alliterative poetry, how it appealed to its original producers and audiences, and why it deserves attention now.

Alliterative Revivals examines eight poems: St. Erkenwald, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Wars of Alexander, The Siege of Jerusalem, the alliterative Morte Arthure, De Tribus Regibus Mortuis, The Awntyrs off Arthure, and Somer Sunday. Chism both historicizes these texts and argues that they are themselves obsessed with history, dramatizing encounters between the ancient past and the medieval present as a way for fourteenth-century contemporaries to examine and rethink a range of ideologies.

These poems project contemporary conflicts into vivid, vast, and spectacular historical theaters in order to reimagine the complex relations between monarchy and nobility, ecclesiastical authority and lay piety, courtly and provincial culture, western Christendom and its easterly others, and the living and their dead progenitors. In this, alliterative romance joins hands with other late fourteenth-century literary texts that make trouble at the borders of aristocratic culture.

Review

"A learned and witty book. . . . Alliterative Revivals is an important effort to bring to the study of these poems the concerns and methods which have transformed literary study in other periods and genres. The book shows courage and resourcefulness working around the gaps in our knowledge of the poems' origins and contexts. Its successes will no doubt encourage others to explore the possibilities of making late medieval literature speak to new concern in new voices."—Arthuriana

Song of the Road: The Poetic Travel Journal of Tsarchen Losal GyatsoFrom Wisdom Publications

In Song of the Road, Tsarchen Losal Gyatso (1502-66), a tantric master of the Sakya tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, weaves ecstatic poetry, song, and accounts of visionary experiences into a record of pilgrimage to central Tibet. Translated for the first time here, Tsarchen's work, a favorite of the Fifth Dalai Lama, brims with striking descriptions of encounters with the divine as well as lyrical portraits of Tibetan landscape. The literary flights of Song of the Road are anchored by Tsarchen's candid observations on the social and political climate of his day, including a rare example in Tibetan literature of open critique of religious power.

Like the Japanese master Basho's famous Narrow Road to the Interior, written 150 years later, Tsarchen's travelogue contains a mixture of luminous prose and verse, rich with allusions. Traveling on horseback with a band of companions, Tsarchen visited some of the most renowned holy sites of the Tsang region, incluing Jonang, Tropu, Ngor, Shalu, and Gyantse. In his introduction and copious notes, Cyrus Stearns unearths the layers of meaning concealed in the text, excavating the history, legends, and lore associated with people and places encountered on the pilgrimage, revealing the spiritual as well as geographical topography of Tsarchen's journey.

Review
"Over the history of Tibetan Buddhism, travel across mountain and plain has long provided an occasion for profound reflections on more spiritual paths. Such reflections abound in Song of the Road. Readers of both English and Tibetan owe a great debt to the renowned translator Cyrus Stearns for bringing this almost forgotten work to the audience it so richly deserves." (Donald Lopez, Chair, Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, University of Michigan )

"Cyrus Stearns's Song of the Road is a rare gem shining light on the life of the remarkable Tibetan master Tsarchen Losal Gyatso. This beautiful rendering of Tsarchen's autobiography captures, with such freshness, the immediacy and profound insight that characterize the Tibetan master's spiritual journey." (Thupten Jinpa, Institute of Tibetan Classics )

“Congratulations Cyrus—and of course everybody else who had a hand in it—for producing such ahandsome and different book. The translation is splendid. Thank you somuch for allowing us the pleasure of reading back and forth between theTibetan and English, so we can be amazed at just how well you’ve managedthe transition from one to the other. As a translator (or so I think)myself, I’m certain other translators will find reasons for jealousy, ora gnawing sense of inferiority, or both.” (Dan Martin, Tibeto-logic )

fine translation of a Tibetan travelogue (lam-yig) from 1539
By inner exile
Given the brevity and scope of this work bearing the short title "Celebration of the Cuckoo" (dPyid-kyi rgyal-mo'i dga'-ston), Cyrus Stearns latest book is less ambitious than his previous tome about King of the Empty Plain: The Tibetan Iron-Bridge Builder Tangtong Gyalpo. The present one is a praiseworthy undertaking, nonetheless, that has come to completion thanks to the crucial guidance of Dezhung Rinpoché, Chogyé Trichen Rinpoché, and Khenpo (abbot) Gyatso (Dehradun, India), and also because until very recently (2006) this autobiographical piece by Tsarchen Losal Gyatso - believed by some to be the embodiment of mahásiddha Virúpa, ?837-909?, p. 155 - had been available only in its extracted form from the Great Fifth Dalai Lama's biography of said Sakya tantric master (not of the mad adept/drubnyön mould, as far as I can tell) who was trained in the Shangpa Kagyü and Nyingma traditions as well.

We can retrace the steps - or more precisely hoofprints since he rode mostly on horseback to spare his ailing legs - of his third journey to Ü, starting from his seat at Tupten Gepel (south of Sakya) and arriving in the vicinity of Rinpung, close to the south bank of the river Tsangpo/Brahmaputra. En route he and his fellow mendicants visited key centers of learning (Jonang, Bodong, Ngor Ewam, Shalu, etc.), sacred sites, some of whose glory had eclipsed by then, and politico-strategically important forts and castles (Panam, Nakartsé, Gyantsé).
As was common for monks of his standing, we find Tsarchen at the bestowing and receiving end of various teachings/transmissions, occasionally having ecstatic visionary experience of the wrathful manifestation of Vajrayoginí (Náro Khecarí) or those of dharma protectors like Takshön ("Mounted on Tiger"), et al.

While going through the prose parts that are followed by poems recapturing and embellishing their gist, the reader can come across:
a) evocative description of the landscape: "All the rivers and streams were fully swollen, like a sea of sapphires suddenly welling up, beautiful with garlands of waves whose white foamy smiles laughed in a hundred directions" (p. 31);
b) admonition to the devout: "Small-minded persons, who accept as true the baseless gossip people speak at crossroads, risk revealing their own and many other people's faults, with a song of groundless, nervous alarm" (p. 69);
c) advice to fellow pilgrims: "(a lay chieftain clever in trivial matters [i.e., parsimonious district officers and secular governors]) is of no use except as a pack ram's leather bag that dashes a fox's daylong hopes" (p. 87). To appraise the sharpness of this observation, Khenpo Gyatso comes to our aid: "[A] fox might see from far away that a leather bag has fallen from the back of a ram that is carrying provisions for a band of nomads...That night he sneaks to where the bag has been dropped but finds that it is just full of salt, and his daylong hope of something to eat is destroyed" (p. 145).

Much to the delight of those who can read Tibetan, the original text is given in dbu-can script on the left-hand pages. Both the introduction and the translation themselves come with scholarly endnotes (pp. 17-21, 124-55) of the religio-cultural/historical kind, while 20 highly relevant, b&w photos decorate the corpus, in addition to having the same map on the inside cover as well as on pp. 22-3; bibliography (157-62), index (163-73); + xvii (preface).

Addendum:

In connection with the reportedly 120-feet-tall (!) Maitreya statue at the Tropu (Khro-phu) monastery (p. 59, 134), it's worth to note there was another giant gilt copper image of the same future Buddha housed in the aptly named monastic complex of Great Maitreya in Rong (Rong Byams-chen - also called Byams-gling - chos-sde, of which a cursory mention is made on p. 153), a mile or so south to Rinpung ("Heap of Preciousness").
It was completed and consecrated in 1474, possibly under the supervision of the second abbot Kun-dga' bKra'-shis-ba and his patrons, Nor-bzang (1403 - died b/w 1467 and '71) and his eldest son alive, Kun-bzang of the House of Rin-spungs (see fol. 4a/131.1-3 in Yar-lungs-pa's "Rinpung Genealogy" referenced in the bibliography on p. 161, and pp. 623.21-624.2 in "Chos-'byung dPag-bsam lJon bzang" (1748 - "Wish-Granting Tree. A Religious History") by Sum-pa Ye-shes dpal-'byor (Kan-su'u Mi-rigs dPe-skrun-khang 1992).
Estimates for the height of this gilt copper (gser-zangs) statue greatly differ: at the bottom end a three-storey mgon-khang (endnote 247 in THE GEOGRAPHY OF TIBET ACCORDING TO THE 'DZAM-GLING-RGYAS-BSHAD translated and annotated by T. V. Wylie, Rome 1962) is said to have contained a Maitreya 10 metres in height (Victor Chan Tibet Handbook (Moon Travel Guide) p. 845; Gyurme Dorje Footprint Tibet Handbook : The Travel Guide p. 252); whereas at the top end its parameters of 75 khru (~ cubit?) x 145 mtho (~ span?) found in "Vaidurya ser-po" (Yellow Beryl) correspond in Wylie's reckoning to 112.5 and 72.5 feet, respectively (ibid.).
The monastery soon became a local hub for clerical education with four Sa-skya-pa colleges (under the names of sTeng-rgyas, dPal-'byor-sgang, Shar-chen and lDum-ra-sdings), two affiliated with the Bo-dong bKa'-brgyud-pa-s (Nor-bu-gling and Chen-khang), and a dGe-lugs-pa one called bDe-chen.

... to publish something of his extensive research on this great master Tsarchen Losal Gyatso
By Amazon Customer
I have been waiting years for Cyrus Stearns to publish something of his extensive research on this great master Tsarchen Losal Gyatso, but I had no idea of the beauty of Tsarchen's own writings. The poems are meditations in themselves. Please, Cyrus, finish translating and publish the Tsarchen biography by the Fifth Dalai Lama so we here in the west can benefit from this enlightened being's example. - Kunga Dekyi

Song of the Road a different kind of movie

I enjoyed the movie which had me thinking about mans narrow perspective on life. The in your face materialism of the western world
is mimicked throughout the movie. A movie worth viewing as thought provoking.

About the Author
Though he is traditionally credited as the author of the "Iliad "and the "Odyssey", there is no reliable information about an actual, historical Homer. In antiquity, he was an honored figure, despite little being known about his life or even his era; he was credited then with several other shorter works in addition to the two epics. Current scholarship tends to view the poems as the work of many hands over many years, with differing opinions on the role and importance of any single figure in their creation or promulgation.

Silly Drawings
By J. Sorenson
What is with the silly drawings? Like these help in understanding the story at all? There are little quizzes at the end of each chapter which, I guess, are sort of helpful for reviewing. But these guides seem to lack the overall analysis that a certain other notes product provides. I was looking for more. I suppose if you want quiz and essay ideas, these notes have those as well as the basic storyline and characters.

The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament, by Craig S. Keener

Voted one of Christianity Today's 1995 Books of the Year!

To understand and apply the Bible well, you need two crucial sources of information. One is the Bible itself. The other is an understanding of the cultural background of the passage you're reading.

Only with the background can you grasp the author's original concerns and purposes. This unique commentary provides, in verse-by-verse format, the crucial cultural background you need for responsible--and richer--Bible study. It includes a glossary of cultural terms and important historical figures, maps and charts, up-to-date bibliographies, and introductory essays about cultural background information for each book of the New Testament.

Based on ten years of in-depth study, this accessible and bestselling commentary is valuable for pastors in sermon preparation, for Sunday-school and other church teachers as they build lessons, for missionaries concerned not to import their own cultural biases into the Bible, for college and seminary students in classroom assignments, and for everyday Bible readers seeking to deepen and enhance their study of Scripture.

From Library Journal
Keener has accomplished a monumental task in assimilating a vast amount of primary and secondary material on first-century Jewish and Greco-Roman culture and making it accessible to nonspecialist readers. In addition, he displays a wide knowledge of New Testament scholarship (Pauline studies, gospel studies, etc.). To make this commentary useful to a diverse audience, Keener has minimized theological comments and emphasized historical, cultural, and social background. The text is clearly written and fairly free of technical jargon. There are few citations in the text to primary sources (and none to secondary ones), since the author felt they would be cumbersome to lay readers; some readers (the more curious or skeptical ones) may feel shortchanged by the omission of such references. But in light of the overall quality of the commentary, it's a small matter. This volume should be a useful addition to public, academic, and seminary libraries.

Review
"Well-written in a style suitable for both professional students and daily disciples." (World Christian)

"Keener has indeed taken careful aim at an aptly defined target, and his equally careful methodology has enabled him to hit it dead-center. . . . His purpose is to place at the modern reader's disposal the cultural background of the Bible, something that the original readers already knew and assumed. . . . Few pages do not contain some helpful cultural insight into a New Testament passage. . . . Even those already familiar with New Testament background will profit." (Biblical Archaeologist)

"Keener . . . has done the remarkable. He has produced a work that was genuinely needed but not envisioned--until now." (Faith and Mission)

"It is nearly impossible to imagine that one person could have compiled all the information contained within this volume. But Keener has not simply compiled material; he has mastered it. . . . At every turn of the page, whose who treasure the Bible will find something new and valuable." (Themelios)

"The product of a decade of work, this commentary is indispensable for Bible study. . . . By selectively providing background information from a variety of primary and secondary sources, Keener admirably bridges the cultural gaps experienced by modern readers of the Bible. . . . Sermons and lessons will be greatly enhanced by referencing this excellent resource." (Ministries Today)

"Keener succeeds in being informative and, this reviewer thinks, more than fair in trying not to impose his views on the texts. . . . Keener, as he promised, wrote a 'popular' rather than a scholarly book. Keener's scholarly credentials are strong and his book is a God-send to busy pastors. As already indicated, it is of great help to Bible students who do not have access to a theological library." (Southwestern Journal of Theology)

"A stunning work destined certainly to become a standard resource for study of the New Testament." (Journal of Psychology and Theology)

"Keener has accomplished a monumental task in assimilating a vast amount of primary and secondary material on first-century Jewish and Greco-Roman culture and making it accessible to nonspecialist readers. In addition, he displays a wide knowledge of New Testament scholarship (Pauline studies, gospels studies, etc.). To make this commentary useful to a diverse audience, Keener has minimized theological comments and emphasized historical, cultural, and social background. The text is clearly written and fairly free of technical jargon. . . . This volume should be a useful addition to public, academic, and seminary libraries." (Library Journal)

"Uncovers cultural backgrounds and provides historical perspective for nearly every verse in the New Testament." (The Mennonite)

"In recent years scholars have provided Bible translations and study helps of various kinds, but one major resource has been lacking. Where could busy ministers and laypersons go to find the background for 'what was going on in Bible days'? . . . A resource tool is finally available, providing the background for every passage in the New Testament. . . . The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament condenses over ten years of careful research into a resource tool that is at its readers' fingertips. . . . [Keener's] earlier books, which tackle issues like New Testament teachings on divorce, women's roles, and slavery, are heavily documented; but The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament is readable and should be accessible to all students of the Bible. . . . Otherwise unavailable information brings various texts alive." (The Baptist Informer)

"A fine tool for personal Bible study. It analyzes the historical-cultural background of every passage of the New Testament in clear, non-technical language, making it especially useful for those without expertise in Greek or ancient history. Unlike a typical commentary, which interprets the meaning of each text, Keener's book offers insights which enable readers to study individual texts with greater personal involvement and practical gain. The author, an evangelical Protestant, is remarkably balanced and unbiased in his analysis, making this quite suitable for Catholic use--a valuable supplement to a good concordance, commentary, and Bible dictionary." (The Bulletin of Applied Biblical Studies, The Franciscan University of Steubenville)

"Books are available that give us the cultural, social and historical background of Bible passages, but most are hidden away in academic libraries. Now Craig Keener . . . provides us with a single volume in a verse-by-verse format that covers the entire New Testament. Why use a background commentary? With it, we get a glimpse of the New Testament authors' original concerns and purposes. . . . Keener writes in clear, non-technical language for the lay person. His commentary is a valuable tool for teachers, small-group leaders, pastors, missionaries (who are trying not to impose their own cultural biases in their new setting), and all who enjoy digging deeper in their personal study of God's Word." (Discipleship Journal)

"So far as this reviewer can discern, Keener knows his ancient sources and knows the best recent ideas on how to interpret them. . . . Teachers, pastors and students of the Bible will find it immensely helpful; I will probably include it in my next revised list of eight to twelve books recommended for a 'Basic Home Christian Library.'" (Presbyterion)

"This in-depth study is based on ten years of research by Keener. . . . It provides at least some cultural background for nearly every verse in the New Testament. . . . You need to have it in your theological library." (A.M.E. Zion Quarterly Review)

"An excellent resource for pastors and teachers. The impressive volume contains a verse-by-verse look at cultural, religious, and social issues that come into play in the New Testament context. This is background information that most pastors' libraries will not contain, which makes it a vital tool for serious Bible study and preaching." (The Communicator)

"Whether you preach sermons, teach Sunday school, lead a small group, or read the Bible for personal study, your understanding of God's word can be deepened and enriched by learning more about the context of each passage from this valuable book." (PRISM Magazine)

"This is a splendid book to have next to your Bible. . . . A fascinating Bible study resource." (Good News)

"A few hours with this volume will rapidly convince one that Craig Keener . . . is a rising star among evangelical New Testament scholars. . . . Written simply and clearly, though meticulously researched, this book will be a valuable acquisition for every thoughtful student, pastor, and teacher who tries to understand the original setting for any passage in the New Testament. . . . Carefully researched and judiciously written from an orthodox Christian perspective to provide dependable information without overt theological bias. I heartily recommend it." (Enrichment)

"I never study a New Testament passage without consulting this excellent work, and do commend it at every opportunity! . . . For us 'working communicators' it is often a great shortcut to a quick remembrance of the background to passages and at other times, truly enlightening." (Todd Hunter, bishop, Anglican Church of North America)

"A rich and lucid resource for understanding God's Word. This work is presented in a way that serves the needs of pastors in their sermon preparation, as well as lay members in personal Bible studies." (Charles Blake, Presiding Bishop of Church of God in Christ)

"Specifically designed to meet the needs of pastors and students who have less access to scholarly resources and less time to mine exegetical details. As such, it is extremely accessible and user friendly, a welcome addition to the pastor's bookshelf." (Christopher Hall, Eastern University)

"Carefully researched yet accessible for the busy pastor or other reader, this commentary puts years of research at the reader's fingertips, passage by passage, in a single volume." (George O. Wood, general superintendent of the Assemblies of God)

"The book is a rich and accessible mine of important information and a remarkable accomplishment." (D. Moody Smith, Duke University Divinity School)

"One of the most useful available reference tools for pastors and laypeople alike, and I frequently recommend it from the pulpit. The reader simply has to look up his comments on a passage to find out, for example, why it was momentous that the prodigal son received sandals and a ring when he returned to his father. Although background material is often notoriously slippery and debatable, Keener makes it useful for students of the Scripture." (Gary Shogren, Biblical Theological Seminary)

"We can no more ignore the humanness of the writers of the [Bible's] written word than we can discount the humanity of the living Lord. But their humanness had cultural connotations. . . . It is therefore not only helpful, but also necessary, for us to know of their cultures the better to understand the inspired word. The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament will prove most helpful in this regard." (D. Stuart Briscoe, pastor and author)

"Every biblical text has cultural assumptions. Like an intriguing archaeological dig, Keener's work surfaces the cultural and worldview assumptions of the New Testament. This work brings background to the foreground, so the text's meaning is more accessible to all." (Darrell Bock, Dallas Theological Seminary)

"Here is a book many people have been waiting for. . . . The IVP Bible Background Commentary should prove to be a truly useful book." (Gordon Fee, Regent College)

"This book will meet a significant need. . . . The discerning reader will detect how well Keener has drawn on the results of much recent research and presented it in a way that pastors and laypeople will be able to grasp." (Clinton E. Arnold, Talbot School of Theology)

"Most one-volume, single-author Bible commentaries or study Bibles are erratic in their coverage. . . . Craig Keener's work is an astonishing exception. . . . He can be trusted in almost every statement he makes, and even his more interpretative opinions are consistently well-grounded. Keener has given preachers and lay Christians alike an invaluable resource for years to come." (Craig Blomberg, Denver Seminary)

"A phenomenal work. I know of no other New Testament reference that brings together so much information and insight into one volume. Keener has gathered a host of background material from a broad range of ancient and modern sources and put them literally at the preacher's fingertips." (Cheryl Sanders, Howard University Divinity School)

A unique resource
By faience
Finally, here's all the stuff I always wanted, but could never get in the notes of a study Bible. Keener's book is 831 pages of double-columned passage-by-passage commentary, readable but never "dumbed down." "Background" refers not only to history, but to society, culture, and everyday life, and the book is both interesting and illuminating.
IVP is an overtly Christian publisher, which might make some readers, those who want objective scholarship, wary. It need not. The vast majority of this commentary is concerned with documented fact. Not all, of course. Some events are matters of controversy among historians -- for example, Herod's "slaughter of the innocents," which is mentioned by no other document than the Gospel of Matthew, and which many scholars think never happened. But, on checking the relatively "liberal" HarperCollins Study Bible, I find this isn't mentioned there either, which indicates that the verdict is still out, and that Keener has acceptable reason for taking Matthew's word on the subject. If the objectivity question bothers you, you could use Keener's book in conjunction with an ecumenical study Bible, such as HarperCollins or New Oxford Annotated. But this volume seems, to me, to be that rare book that both faith-based Bible readers, and objective scholars could love.
My biggest complaint is that, while the binding and paper are high quality, the paper is heavy & the binding stiff. It will not open flat for easy back-and-forth referral between it and the Bible text you're using.
Other than that, it's a wonderful piece of work on all counts.

Excellent resource!
By book lover
I have been using this resource for more than four years in a variety of contexts--academic classes, Bible studies with high school and college students, and so on. This book is an invaluable resource.

Two main reasons to buy this book: 1) We are all very removed from the cultural perspective of the authors who wrote the New Testament. This book helps bridge that gap by pointing out details we would consider irrelevant and giving context to other details we would otherwise misunderstand. 2) The text is highly readable and accessible for a wide selection of readers. The scholarship is very strong, fair, and thought-provoking, and furthermore, the editorial team did an excellent job ensuring that the information was presented in a clear and interesting manner. I've often found myself provoked to curiousity and ended up reading more than I originally intended to (and, no, that is not a habit for me with most reference books!).

A brief word, too, about the fact that an evangelical publisher is responsible for this book being published. First, every publishing house has biases, so to judge an evangelical publisher for publishing work sympathetic to evangelical tendencies is a bit harsh. Secondly, as one who reads a fair amount from a variety of sources, I have often found that IV Press books exhibit an uncommon level of integrity and fairness in the way their books are written. Thirdly, it is a logical fallacy to argue that a book does not contain truth or is inaccurate due to its origin. Have an open mind and judge the accuracy of the material on its own merits.

Really, this is a great text, in some ways better than the Old Testament Bible Background Commentary. I know several dozen men and women who regularly use this book in their work and who consider it very helpful for the purpose of presenting the New Testament accurately. I strongly recommend this book to you.

Very helpful book for in-depth study of New Testament

Craig Keener is a very good scholar. His use of source material (primary and secondary) is very judicious and sound. I have always wanted a book that tried as much as possible to avoid giving interpretation, but instead focused on background customs and "everyday" perspectives of the peoples of the first century. This book does just this. However, one cannot entirely avoid interpretation in a volume like this. Still, Keener's work will help you get more out of your Bible study and it will help you avoid esoteric explanations of the Scriptures. This book is especially good for those who are weary of commentaries. Thanks again to Keener for the work put into this book.

Couldn't maintain my interest...
By TxMom
I enjoyed the first book in this series so much, I ran out to get Grave Consequences as soon as it hit the store. I must admit that I stopped reading word for word about half way through the story and skimmed through to the end. When an author creates two compelling, likeable characters who are vying for the heroine's affections, it is possible that the reader will not like the heroine's choice. I didn't care for Cora's choice and the direction of the book from that point. I also agree that the story bogged down in places as well and not even the historical details could capture my interest again.

Read Lisa Bergren's River of Time series instead...
By Sunny Books
I love Lisa Tawn Bergren's River of Time series, but this one just isn't for me.

I could barely make it through. There just isn't enough of a plot here to justify three LONG books. I was shocked when I finished the first one that so little plot had been covered by so many wordy pages.

Did Not Disappoint!
By Charity U
Hooray! This second book in the Grand Tour series by Bergren did most certainly not disappoint in the least! It was absolutely riveting...I couldn't stop reading. The story moves along quickly and smoothly through several fascinating European locations, following the travels and yes, drama, of Cora and her companions. It's full of well-thought-out plot twists and turns that you most certainly will not suspect. Between those enthralling locations (can I go?! Please?!), gripping suspense (you won't be able to put it down either...), and unexpected surprises, this book come together as a must-have for any Bergren fan. Just make sure you read "Glamorous Illusions," book one, first...it's crucial to understanding this one. Be warned - it doesn't end with everything neatly wrapped up! There's still a dose of mystery (and we have to wait HOW LONG for "Glittering Promises"?!). Overall, it was an
amazing book and I did love it.

**Litfuse Publicity Group supplied me with this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to post a positive review, nor was I paid in any way other than the book.**

Food Chains: From Farmyard to Shopping Cart (Hagley Perspectives on Business and Culture)From University of Pennsylvania Press

In recent years, the integrity of food production and distribution has become an issue of wide social concern. The media frequently report on cases of food contamination as well as on the risks of hormones and cloning. Journalists, documentary filmmakers, and activists have had their say, but until now a survey of the latest research on the history of the modern food-provisioning system—the network that connects farms and fields to supermarkets and the dining table—has been unavailable. In Food Chains, Warren Belasco and Roger Horowitz present a collection of fascinating case studies that reveal the historical underpinnings and institutional arrangements that compose this system.

The dozen essays in Food Chains range widely in subject, from the pig, poultry, and seafood industries to the origins of the shopping cart. The book examines what it took to put ice in nineteenth-century refrigerators, why Soviet citizens could buy ice cream whenever they wanted, what made Mexican food popular in France, and why Americans turned to commercial pet food in place of table scraps for their dogs and cats. Food Chains goes behind the grocery shelves, explaining why Americans in the early twentieth century preferred to buy bread rather than make it and how Southerners learned to like self-serve shopping. Taken together, these essays demonstrate the value of a historical perspective on the modern food-provisioning system.

"The essays in this book . . . help us to discover what we might learn from the past and identify what might aid us in interpreting our food provisioning system in the future."—Food and Foodways

1. Making Food Chains: The Book
Roger Horowitz

I begin my food history classes by drawing a simple line on the blackboard with "farm" at one end and "dinner" at the other. Then I ask the students to explain some of the steps that are necessary for food to move from one end to the other. Within a few minutes the simple line is a complex tree bristling with stages such as "processing" "trucking" "scientific research" "retailing" etc. etc. When the board starts to get too hard to read—which doesn't take long—I stop, to make the point of how complicated it is to bring food to our tables.

Many students in my classes come with prior interest in food; often spirited discussions break out about the merits (and demerits) of particular Food Network chefs. Some are looking for careers in nutrition, others work in restaurants, and a few even cook themselves! Yet most have little knowledge of the complex chain of firms and social practices that are necessary to make our provisioning system work. And they want to learn more.

A somewhat equivalent gap exists in the growing food studies field. Among the steady outpouring of books much is written on the culinary and cultural dimensions of food and food consumption practices, along with an astonishing proliferation of books that combine recipes with eating philosophy. Studies that consider provisioning are growing in number, but remain small in proportion. Yet there is considerable interest in histories of food that engage with larger patterns of social development, especially how we get the food that we eat.

These insights informed the discussions among Phil Scranton, Susan Strasser, Warren Belasco and myself as we started planning a conference on food history at the Hagley Museum and Library in the fall of 2006. As the nation's leading business history library, Hagley has considerable resources for the study of food that we wanted to bring attention to scholars in the field. We hold one or two conferences on varying subjects each year; we felt it was time to do another one on food. A 1999 conference, "Food Nations," had been a big success and was the foundation for a highly successful book in our Hagley Perspectives on Business and Culture book series. While Food Nations dealt with—as the name implies—food, identity, and social practice, we titled the 2006 conference "Food Chains" as we wanted it to focus on the provisioning systems that supply our world with food. We defined "provisioning" in the call for papers as "the complex institutional arrangements necessary for food to move from farm to the dinner table." To complement the conference's impact we issued a guide to research materials at Hagley that can be used to study food history.

This volume includes all the papers presented at the conference, plus two solicited specifically for this publication. All are original essays not previously published. The book's structure emulates that of food chains, starting with "animals" from which food comes, moving to the "processing" necessary to turn natural products into palatable items, and concluding with the process of "sales" through which consumers obtain their meals. Some articles hone in on one item—pigs, chickens, crabs, ice, ice cream and shopping carts—to show its role in provisioning systems. Other essays look at industry segments—foods processed in imperial nations, dog food, and Mexican food—to elaborate on its internally complex "chains" of acquisition, manufacturing, and distribution. And a few consider places—kitchens and retail stores—where consumers make the decisions over what to buy and what to make for their families.

The opening "Overview" section contextualizes the volume's content through two synthetic essays. Editor Warren Belasco surveys current literature in the food studies field and suggests the contribution of taking "Food Chains" as an organizing principle to understand food in our society. Shane Hamilton looks closely at theoretical work by historians and social scientists employing commodity chain analysis. He assesses the value of taking a comprehensive approach to identify actors, technologies, forms of knowledge, and forms of capital involved in transforming a raw material into a consumable good.

The subsection "Animals" follows with papers that discuss pigs, chicken and crabs. The authors all consider how the nature of consumer demand and food distribution influences the use, and at times the very character, of these animals.

Joe L. Anderson charts how farmers and agricultural colleges changed the form of the American pig following World War II in order to satisfy changing consumer demand. He argues that these efforts revealed tension about health and diet within postwar society that were sufficiently powerful to fuel a massive effort to remake a species. As incomes rose and concerns about fat content increased, firms, farmers and other actors in the industry (such as the federal government) altered the hog from an animal intended to supply fat to a "lean" version whose principal purpose was to provide meat.

Andrew Godley and Bridget Williams show how poultry became the most popular type of meat consumed in the United Kingdom after 1960. In contrast to the United States (where the USDA was so influential), the modern poultry industry emerged in the first thirty years after the Second World War in Britain because of the deliberate investments by a select group of leading food retailers, who needed to economize on the costs of meat distribution as they pioneered self-service stores. The widespread distribution of cheap chicken led to its mass adoption throughout the country.

Kelly Feltault sees the expansion of the imported crabmeat industry as emerging from the development of global supply chains for American seafood restaurants. She emphasizes that scarcity of Chesapeake Bay crabmeat was not a factor in the efforts of large seafood firms to expand production in Thailand. The adoption of domestic quality standards known as HACCP regulations facilitated production and importation of Asian crabmeat into the American restaurant market. Expansion of the crab industry also intersected with Thailand's export oriented development strategy.

All food has to move from producers to consumers in a market economy, a complex process that requires processing—in complex ways—of raw ingredients. in which transportation, processing, and preservation are critical. The papers in the "processing" subsection consider such transitions, both the transformation of the foods that can take place and the complex matrix of production needs and consumer preferences that influence the firms engaged in such activities.

Richard Wilk considers how extended food chains create settings where products can change their cultural significance as they move from place to place. He argues that the transformations which goods go through as they move along industrial commodity chains are just as significant as the conversion of cultural property into commodities such as 'tribal' art, music, and traditional medicine. Wilk illustrates his argument by showing how raw foodstuffs from 19th century colonized nations were transformed in substance and meaning when they moved through trade networks, especially when goods were processed and packaged in imperial nations such as Britain to create genteel "civilized" food.

Jonathan Rees explores the unique character of ice in the late nineteenth century United States, as it was both part of the food provisioning system and food itself. He adeptly shows that not all ice was the same. Natural ice, cut from lakes and rivers, varied considerably in quality. It could be a factor in food preservation when packed into railroad cars or grocer's freezers, as well as a consumer good when sold for use in home iceboxes or drinks. Rees shows how consumer concerns about the purity of the ice that came into contact with food bedeviled the natural ice industry.

Katherine Grier uncovers the roots of the American pet food business that currently attracts annual expenditures of $18 billion. Curiously, it was a product that nobody really needed; certainly dogs and cats did not demand it! Grier identifies the development of pet food, then, in the way it met human needs in the American provisioning system. Pet food absorbed surpluses among producers of human food and the decline of urban kitchens as sites for processing of raw materials left fewer table scraps for pets to eat. Pet food succeeded as it satisfied the needs of humans at several places along the provisioning axis.

Jenny Leigh Smith tells a fascinating story of how Josef Stalin and his successors put the resources of the Soviet state behind the development of a national system of ice cream production and distribution. Soviet citizens could easily purchase ice cream from local vendors, unlike the many obstacles they encountered when buying other kinds of food or consumer goods. Smith sees two main factors explaining this curious paradox. First, the Soviet government wanted to create a cheap luxury product for citizens to counteract the social problems it faced with so much material scarcity. Second, it was easier for the command economy to distribute a frozen good such as ice cream than the more perishable ingredients that comprised it, especially milk.

Jeffrey Pilcher unravels how Mexican food spread internationally. He focuses on the development of an infrastructure necessary to supply Mexican ingredients to restaurants and home cooks throughout the world. Globalizing Mexican food required basic structural transformations in the traditional labor-intensive nature of this cuisine. To supply such food profitably demanded considerable economies of scale, thereby hindering the competitive efforts of Mexican firms whose advantage lay in local knowledge and advantaging large American-based companies. As a result, Pilcher contends that the globalization of Mexican food has been in its Americanized form.

Food exists to be consumed, so the book closes with a section that considers the selling of food to men, women and children for them to eat. The emergence of particular retail food stores and restaurants depended on changes in the production and distribution of products as well as patterns of consumer demand. We fittingly close this subsection—and the book—with a paper on the shopping cart, so necessary for consumers to take their purchases from the store, leaving all other stages of the food chain behind.

Lisa Tolbert explains the attraction of self-service retail stores among white women in the early 20th century South by focusing on the Piggly Wiggly chain. Southern white women often preferred to call in their orders to stores as there were many challenges to respectability in public retail space. Tolbert shows how grocers strategically used the concept of self-service to transform the cultural message of the southern grocery store and food shopping. Piggly Wiggly created store interiors and advertising campaigns that successfully recast the cultural role of the grocery store as an emblem of modernity and food shopping as an appropriate activity for white southern ladies.

Patrick Patterson details the transformation of food retailing in Eastern Europe following World War II. He shows that by 1975 relatively prosperous Communist countries such as Hungary and Yugoslavia had markedly improved food production and distribution methods. At the retail end of the food chain, modern self-serve grocery stores paralleled the western focus on consumer-oriented and well stocked food emporiums. They were, however, state-owned stores wedded to a discourse of "socialist commerce." Nonetheless they shared much of the theory, styles, and practices of privately owned western supermarkets—and were able to deliver abundant food to their customers.

Katherine Leonard Turner identifies the choices facing working class families in the late 19th and early 20th century between cooking and obtaining ready-to-eat food. Kitchen appliances, home sizes, and availability of space to grow food or harbor animals varied widely from city to city, and influenced the calculations of housekeepers whether to prepare or buy food consumed by their families. Especially in the case of bakers bread she shows that locally prepared food did not entirely replace home cooking but it provided an important supplement, thereby altering the nature of food preparation in the working-class home.

Catherine Grandclement sketches the technological and mythical processes of creating the supermarket shopping car. Self serve food stores needed a reliable means to prevent the weight of goods from determining how much shoppers would purchase to bring home. Yet the development of the proper vehicle was complex as it had both to satisfy the customer yet also address the needs of the retailer. Grandclement also shows that the traditional "creation myth" of the shopping cart elevated one inventor (Sylvan Goldman) above other claimants, when in fact the invention process was marked by simultaneous innovations all intended to answer the same shopping challenges.

We hope that readers will leave this volume with a richer understanding of the complex arrangements that bring food to our tables. Making this book also required complex relationships, and many thanks to the Hagley Museum and Library staff, especially Carol Lockman, for their role organizing the 2006 "Food Chains" conference. Commentators at that conference, including Shane Hamilton, Tracey Deutsch, Phil Scranton, Warren Belasco and myself, commenced the process of turning papers into articles. Editor Robert Lockhart at University of Pennsylvania Press expertly brought the book through the editorial review and subsequent manuscript preparation process. And it is for me always a pleasure to play a role throughout the complex chain between imagining a book and seeing it finally appear in print.

Highly recommended especially for college library collections
By Midwest Book Review
Food Chains: From Farmyard to Shopping Cart is an anthology of scholarly essays by learned authors discussing assorted aspects of the history of food production and distribution. Individual case studies include "Provisioning Man's Best Friend", about the inception of the commercial pet food industry; "Wheeling One's Groceries around the Store" about the invention and popularity of the modern grocery cart; "Trading Quality, Producing Value" about crabmeat and the global seafood trade; and more. Food Chains is a thoughtful collection examining facets of an increasingly important issue as human population puts an ever-increasing demand on the amount of food the world needs to sustain itself today. Highly recommended especially for college library collections.
