In Sunbelt Capitalism, Elizabeth Tandy Shermer tells the story of the city's expansion and its impact on the nation. The dramatic growth of Phoenix speaks not only to the character and history of the Sunbelt but also to the evolution in American capitalism that sustained it.

In the 1930s, Barry Goldwater and other members of the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce feared the influence of New Deal planners, small businessmen, and Arizona trade unionists. While Phoenix's business elite detested liberal policies, they were not hostile to government action per se. Goldwater and his contemporaries instead experimented with statecraft now deemed neoliberal. They embraced politics, policy, and federal funding to fashion a favorable "business climate," which relied on disenfranchising voters, weakening unions, repealing regulations, and shifting the tax burden onto homeowners and consumers. These efforts allied them with executives at the helm of the modern conservative movement, whose success partially hinged on relocating factories from the Steelbelt to the kind of free-enterprise oasis that Phoenix represented. But the city did not sprawl in a vacuum. All Sunbelt boosters used the same incentives to compete at a fever pitch for investment, and the resulting drain of jobs and capital from the industrial core forced Midwesterners and Northeasterners into the brawl. Eventually this "Second War Between the States" reoriented American politics toward the principle that the government and the citizenry should be working in the interest of business.

An in depth exploration of economic evolution that corrects the normally NorthEast US centric notions. It reminds us that the US is a deeply contested political and economic arena. The book has particular relevance for those arguing that neoliberalism has overtaken economics nation-wide. Shermer shows the story is much more complicated because the US has many different regions whose politics is local - as the saying goes.

Joanne Hession is passionate about small businesses and has worked with County and City Enterprise Boards throughout Ireland. She was listed as one of the top 100 all-island businesswomen by 'Irish Entrepreneur' and 'Your Business' magazines and as one of the top entrepreneurs in Ireland by 'Prudence' magazine. She runs the business training company QED Training. Joan Baker works as an independent business consultant in New Zealand, but returns home to Ireland several times a year. She has written several books on business and financial issues for the NZ and Australian market.

Not for the Self Employed

Not really aimed at Self Employed people. It's a book for someone who wants to build a profitable business that they can then sell on. If you want to do that then this book is for you. If you are looking for advise in setting up a self employed business that you don't intend to expand or sell. Don't bother.

This book is excellent and a great buy now for everybody starting or thinking of starting a business. The Starting point of any great business is getting clarity around the fundamental reasons for its existence and this book cuts right to the heart of the matter enabling you to build yours on solid foundations.

Last year, Boston Globe reporters working on a multipart series uncovered the stunning news that John Kerry's paternal grandfather was Jewish. This book, an expansion of that series, doesn't find any smoking guns about the presumptive Democratic candidate for president. But it does offer a detailed and at times critical biography of the Massachusetts senator. Relying on years of reporting, the authors trace Kerry's itinerant boyhood as the son of a Foreign Service officer and his later years at prestigious St. Paul's, where early on he demonstrated intellectual seriousness and ambition. This ambition is one of the themes of Kerry's life as presented here. The biography shows Kerry's somewhat bumpy ride as a politician and his strength more as an investigator-on Iran-Contra-than as a legislator. The book, written in the lucid, straightforward prose one expects from a newspaper writing team, is especially strong on Kerry's college and Vietnam years, detailing the sense of service felt by Kerry and his fellow Skull-and-Bonesmen at Yale, and Kerry's doubts about the Vietnam War even before he went over to serve. The authors take critical issues head-on: they explore questions over Kerry's first Purple Heart and his leaving Vietnam before his service was over, as well as the Nixon administration's targeting him as an enemy. About the Author
Michael Kranish, has worked for The Boston Globe for 20 years, including the last 16 in the newspaper's Washington Bureau. He was the White House reporter during the last two years of the presidency of George H.W. Bush and the first two years of Bill Clinton. He was the paper's national political reporter during the 1996 and 2000 campaigns. During the 2004 cycle, his work included a series of biographical stories about the candidates, including one on the life of Senator John F. Kerry. His other assignments with the Globe have included congressional reporter, New England reporter, and business writer. He previously worked for The Miami Herald and The Lakeland Ledger. A graduate of Syracuse University, he lives in Silver Spring, Md., with his wife, Sylvia, and two daughters, Jessica and Laura.

Brian C. Mooney has been a reporter for newspapers in and around Boston for the past thirty-one years, the last sixteen at The Boston Globe. Prior to that, he wrote for The Boston Herald, The Sun of Lowell, and The Medford Daily Mercury. At the Globe, he has been city hall bureau chief, a member of the newspaper's award-winning Spotlight Team, and a political columnist. A graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, he resides with his wife, Rosemary Lappin, a local television news producer, in Andover, Mass., with their daughter.

Nina J. Easton, deputy chief of the Boston Globe's Washington bureau, is author of the critically acclaimed Gang of Five: Leaders at the Center of the Conservative Ascendancy, which chronicles the rise to power of today's conservative movement. The Washington Post praised the book for telling the story of post-Reagan conservatism "more inventively, exhaustively, and entertainingly than anyone else." Easton's career also includes a decade at the Los Angeles Times, where her Sunday Magazine stories on issues ranging from poverty to politics earned a number of national awards. In addition, she is co-author of the 1982 best-selling book Reagan's Ruling Class: Portraits of the President's Top 100 Officials.

Kerry by the Facts, but Just the Facts

As one might expect from a book expanded from a series of newspaper articles, this biography of John Kerry is a fairly dry and straightforward presentation of the facts of his life. The Globe did an admirable job in assembling, and in some cases uncovering, primary source material on Kerry. (Those expecting a local paper to do a fluff job on the local hero should be aware Kerry has had a strained relationship with the Globe's news staff for thirty years.) As such, this is a very good introduction to the man who would be president, and in a way a sort of skeleton for some as-yet-unwritten future biography that might explore him as a person and public figure in greater detail.

The Globe series pulls no punches in presenting Kerry's career, warts and all. It does a particularly good job at examining the controversies in Kerry's biography and sorting out the facts from the innuendo, the verifiable from the speciously speculative. Vietnam medals, his conservative role in the radical Vietnam Veterans Against the War, his controversial first stabs at elected office, and the basis of his at-times confusing stances on the Iraq and Gulf Wars are all covered from "both sides" with analysis limited only to a reasonable calculus of what version of disputed events is most likely to be true.

As a political biography, this book distinctly has no point of view. Very little in the way of historical context, as might be expected in a more erudite biography, intrudes upon the basic narrative of Kerry's public life. Supporters and detractors of Kerry will find plenty to grab onto within its pages. At the same time, the book should raise questions about Kerry to his partisans as well as underscore his strengths of character, intelllect, and executive abilities to his opponents. The book does a fairly good job at getting at the complexity of Kerry's manner of thinking and public stances, which both explains the allegation of "flip-flopping" in its nuanced contexts and reveals the essentially political nature of Kerry's character.

Those looking into insights into John Kerry's character will find plenty of revealing instances, although this is no "up close and personal" celebrity portrait. Kerry's alleged aloofness comes across more as a person uninterested in wearing his inner psychology on his coat sleeves than as indicative of a person truly cold and removed. It's very difficult to imagine Kerry engaging in, say, Bill Clinton-like sharing of the deep recesses of the soul which so endeared the latter to the electorate; at the same time it's abundantly clear Kerry is the type of person highly unlikely to fall into personal pecadilloes like those which dogged Clinton.

Particularly enlightening is the coverage of Kerry's youth and student days: we see the emergence of a careful thinker, ambitious and sometimes ego-driven from the earliest. Kerry's closest relationships are barely covered, however. We learn he was unhappy and morose following his divorce, but learn little of the nature of his relationship with his first wife. We learn of the pain he felt at having five friends killed in Vietnam, including one of his closest (Dick Pershing, grandson of the General, "Blackjack" Pershing), but the direct way it affected his character and motivations is less clear.

The book spends a bit too much time and space on Kerry's grandfather's Jewish-Austrian roots and death by suicide, given that Kerry himself had no knowledge of this part of his ancestral story until the Globe itself informed him of what it had uncovered. It's an interesting twist, but one which hardly illuminates his half-patrician, half-immigrant rags-to-riches family tree in a way which might've affected the formation of his character.

The tone of the book is uneven, as one might expect from an assemblage of articles written by different journalists, and there are occasional abrupt gaps in the narrative sequence. The notes on sources are usefully quoted with the exact phrase, but do not have enough detail to provide much help for those wishing to research further.

All in all, I'd recommend this as a very good start for those with the time and interest to delve more deeply into Kerry. It certainly compares extremely favorably with the sparse material available on President Bush immediately prior to his election in 2000. Readers strapped for time may wish to concentrate on the story of the young Kerry and the Vietnam-era Kerry, which is a riveting portrait in the trials of character and reads more breezily than the drier details of his Senate career. The definitive portrait of Kerry, of course, awaits at least one or two more chapters as yet unwritten.

Skip the self-congratulatory preface, by the way: the Globe editors being smug and self-righteous about their objectivity does not illuminate the subject of the book to any additional degree.

Dissecting the Democratic Presidential Candidate in 2004

I have read many biographies of political candidates. Almost all such biographies are either puff pieces or hatchet jobs. This biography by contrast is of a different sort, a detailed "who," "what," "when," "why," and "how" the Democratic presidential candidate arrived where he is today. The look is a revealing one that will be helpful to those who want to make a more informed decision about whom to vote for in the coming election. It's well worth your time to read this book.
The authors are three reporters who developed a detailed series on Senator Kerry for the Boston Globe last year. Since then, the series has been expanded and extended to create this volume. The work is much more complete than I expected.
Although I am from Massachusetts, I didn't feel like I knew very much about Senator Kerry before reading this book. Now, I realize why I had this feeling. Senator Kerry hasn't really spent a lot of time in the state except during the period from when he first ran for the House of Representatives until he was elected to the Senate. His father was a foreign service official, and Senator Kerry often lived in foreign lands or at prep schools in either Switzerland or New Hampshire (the Saint Paul's school). He attended college at Yale (where he was a member of the select Skull and Bones) and left there for Vietnam. After he became a senator, most of his time was spent in Washington or in foreign travel. Senate President Billy Bulger used to kid Senator Kerry that part of his district was in Nicaragua.
The book told me quite a few things I didn't know. To me, a man named John Kerry is probably an Irish Catholic. Well, that's not the case. Senator Kerry knew that his father's parents came from Austria and had changed their names. But until the Globe did their research, he did not know that these grandparents had been Jews who converted to Catholicism to avoid persecution. In addition, and also not known to the senator, his paternal grandfather had earned and lost three fortunes and in despair committed suicide in the Copley Plaza hotel in Boston. I also didn't know about what his duty had been in Vietnam, and came away amazed that he survived the suicidal mission of running the small boats on small rivers to draw enemy fire. How awful it is that our men were asked to do that! During the primary campaigns last winter, I thought that the senator looked like someone suffering from cancer. But I didn't realize that he had just been operated on to remove an early stage cancer of the prostate. His family connections fascinated me, as well as his many contacts with famous politicians at an early age.
I also learned that Senator Kerry is a thorough, nuanced thinker who has trouble articulating his complex views into a three word "sound bite" that is so popular with television and newspaper reporters. That matched the impression I had of him when I spent a day at the U.S. Senate in 1987 meeting a number of the leaders there. My host was a Republican and Senator Kerry was the only Democrat invited to attend the function. Clearly, Senator Kerry had made an impression on his colleagues . . . with whom he often differed on foreign affairs.
I enjoyed reading about his visible role in the anti-Vietnam war movement, his attempt to broker peace in Nicaragua, his support for intervention in Serbia and questioning about the first Iraq war.
The book portrays Senator Kerry as an opportunist who is consumed totally by his passion to become president of the United States. I think that portrayal would probably apply to almost everyone who ever ran for president, so I didn't take much away from that point. I was more impressed by the way that he has been a conscience for our country in avoiding foreign conflicts (something George Washington also warned against), opposed institutional forces that can drive a nation to war against the will of its people and sought novel solutions to long-standing problems (such as normalizing relations with Vietnam).
I looked in vain in the book for a sense of his political platform during this election campaign. I had been very impressed by his thinking in reading the new book by Senator Kerry, A Call to Service: My Vision for a Better America, and looked in vain for references to his ideas in this book. I graded the book down one star for missing this obvious part of his biography.
I also faulted the book for failing to compare Senator Kerry to his obvious peer, the President of the United States, who followed him by two years at Yale. Those comparisons would have made the book fascinating reading.
May our nation make a brilliant decision in choosing who will lead us beginning in 2005.

Good , but uneven

Overall this book is "fair and balanced" but tends to be slightly more negative than positive (whoever said this is Pro-Kerry "propaganda" has obviously not read it). The authors do a good job of using different sources and weighing their credibility to come up with a reasonable consensus of what happened. I found the chapters concerning Kerry's youth, college years, and Vietnam experience very interesting. However, some of the chapters seemed too long (family tree, 1996 Senate race). I definitely recommend this book for those who want a better understanding of John Kerry.

Several things bothered me

Reviews have been good for this work so I expected more. Getting through the first 100 pages was the toughest part. The mindless chitter-chatter of women you can't help but dislike was tempting me to "skim." Emily, the main character was all right, you feel empathy for her past rape and consequences therof. However, there were things that bothered me about her as well. She has a history of several miscarriages, and apparently she wants a baby very much with a husband she is in love with. Yet, she constantly puts herself and her baby in harms way, or at the very least in stressful situations, which she is supposed to avoid. She wants to keep her husband from finding out what she's doing, which adds yet more stress. I found credibility lacking here. She goes off with a crazy woman packing firearms, follows people who may harm her, drives in bad weather, jumps into a swimming pool to save another shallow woman, and what about her baby? She paid very little heed to what her husband (a police chief) asked of her. I felt like hitting her upside the head a few times.

This got more interesting as the mystery evolved, but would I recommend it to anyone? I think not. I need to feel connected to the characters and care what happens to them. Looking forward to picking up the book each time influences my ratings. I didn't feel that with this novel. I imagine it was a satisfactory ending for those reviewers that enjoyed it. A 2.5 star rating is all this work will get from this reader.

Lie Still or Still Lies? The Top Ten Things That Are Great About "Lie Still"

When she was in college, Emily was a victim of date rape. Her rapist was killed shortly thereafter, his killer never found. Emily was traumatized but has soldiered on and managed to build a good life. She is now married, 6 months pregnant, in love with her husband and adored by him, as well. Life is good... except that Emily never told her husband about the rape, or about the fact that she is being stalked and threatened by a person or persons unknown.

Her husband, who was in special services, risking his life on a daily basis, has taken a law enforcement job in Texas for more money and less risk. Emily left her gallery in New York City, and the two of them ... soon to be three... are embarking on a new safer more secure life in a cozy little home in Texas.

At least that was the way it was supposed to work out. Unfortunately for Emily, her stalker still knows where she is. Added to that, she has been summoned to the home of the town's leading (and richest) hostess (a woman who collects dirt on her guests with a vengeance), first for some bunko, evil gossip, and social climbing, and then for an afternoon of high stakes truth or dare, where everyone's secrets are about to be revealed.

And everyone has secrets that are best kept secret.

The hostess takes ill. The group disperses, with only some of the secrets leaked, and Emily heads home... only to learn that their hostess has mysteriously disappeared. And someone's broken into their home and left creepy messages for Emily.

Thus the story begins, baring more secrets with each turn of the page.

And do these people have secrets, waiting to be revealed.

That being said, here are the Top Ten Things That are Great About "Lie Still."

10. Julia Heaberlin can really turn a phrase. Sometimes you read a book that is just jarring to the ears. There are no clumsy phrases here. The words flow off the page. Heaberlin can write.

9. A very sensitive, in-depth, thoughtful and accurate study of the effects of date rape, how the stigmas and traumas endure, and the lengths victims must go to in order to cope.

8. The book manages to capture the heat of a sweltering Texas afternoon perfectly. Good news? You can sit in an air conditioned room, put your feet up, and read.

7. Emily and her husband make a very sweet couple. I tire of reading about couples who are always sniping at each other, or rolling their eyes, or not putting credence in what the other says. These two gently understand and accept each others' quirks. It's nice.

6. There are parts of the book that are funny. Truly funny. Some of Emily's perceptions about her pregnancy are up there, along with the hijinks of various Texas mamas.

5. Character, character, character. Heaberlin writes creepy characters and she writes funny characters and she writes tender characters. Each is unique and interesting. She has a tendency to go a tad toward caricature with some. Accept this and then you can enjoy the humor.

4. Secrets. Oh what creepy secrets are revealed. The stuff these women have been hiding will curl your hair (or straighten it, depending on where you started). There is intricate back-story for all the characters, and it will keep you guessing and wondering.

3. Suspense and mystery. The book is chock full of both.

2. Julia Heaberlin tells a great story. This is her second book. I was fortunate enough to read her first ("Playing Dead: a Novel") and loved it, so I jumped at the chance to read this one. The story moves, suspense builds, plots intertwine, characters develop, and events keep unfolding. I read this book while busy with too many other projects, so I kept it with me, and every chance I got, I read a few more pages. The plot lines are perfectly interwoven, with enough creepiness and danger to keep you on the edge of your chair.

1. I'm guessing Heaberlin will write a third book. And I'll be waiting for it.

Making a Killer First Impression

A troubled heroine with a painful past, modern-day murder, and a group of genuinely crazy Texas women - 'Lie Still' takes this odd mix of ingredients and whips it up into a rich reading experience that had me frantically turning the last pages.

Right from the beginning, Julia Heaberlin lets us know what we're in for, introducing us to her main character's worst experience, a date rape she suffered when she was in college. I was worried initially that it would be this experience that defined her character, but I was glad to be proven quite wrong - Emily Page is developed far beyond her rape and quickly becomes a full-bodied character with an admirable personality and remarkable drive. Pregnant and out of place, a recent transplant from a life in New York to a new house in Texas, we're thrown right into Emily's chaos and brought along for the ride as she meets character after character and tries to get to the heart of the many mysteries surrounding her.

And what characters - from refined, cultured Caroline to chatty pageant-queen Letty to mysterious Misty, each the women Emily meets is unique and has a story to tell. Some of the conversations Emily has with these characters had me laughing out loud, others frustrated beyond words - usually a finely-blended mix of both. The best thing about all these characters, from Emily herself to her police officer husband to the odd collection of women, is that none of them are what you might think when you first meet them. Some are better, others are worse - but mostly, they're just people.

'Lie Still' is a murder mystery and a character study and a well-crafted family drama, all wrapped up into one beautiful little package. It's suspenseful and solidly written, in an elegant, no-nonsense style. It's funny and tragic and harrowing - as Emily tries to figure what's going on, if a spectre from her past has come back to haunt her new life or if this is some unknown threat hovering over her, I was compelled to follow all the way to the end.

Call it a lesson in first impressions, and why they're so often wrong. This book, like the people in it, has much more to offer than its first pages might suggest.

Although Willa grows up in the plantation house with her white friends, illegally learns to read, and wears Marianne's cast off gowns, she is still a slave. Never is that fact made more clear than when Foster taunts her and chastises his younger siblings for treating her like family. Then, on her fifteenth birthday the Mistress of Heavenly declares her childhood officially over when she appoints her to be Marianne's personal servant. Willa soon discovers the severe limitations of being a slave.

As it threads through the lives of its diverse characters, this novel captures the complicated and often violent nature of life in the antebellum South. "The Secrets of Heavenly" weaves a dramatic tapestry that includes forbidden love and faithful friendships alongside dangerous obsessions, mental instability, and murder as Willa' s story is told.

About the Author
Teresa Robison enjoyed writing as a child. While her classmates groaned when their teachers assigned book reports, research papers, and essays, Teresa had to hide the spark in her eyes and the giddiness in her voice. From adolescent poetry to short stories, writing was a creative escape for a shy little girl who tried to keep her voice under wraps. As Teresa became a working adult, she always gravitated to the jobs that allowed her the freedom to express ideas. She worked in administrative positions where she could write company policies and employee handbooks, then "graduated" to marketing work where her blood truly began to boil. Ad copy, catalog descriptions, marketing collateral, company newsletters. Then, one day after reading a book titled "To Be a Slave" (by Julius Lester), she was especially angered by one account of particular cruelty. It was the story of infanticide carried out on a plantation where there was a surplus of slave babies. Teresa knew that she had to craft a story and that this "scene" had to be woven into its fabric. Two years later, her first novel, "The Secrets of Heavenly," was born. Now she hopes her voice will be heard. Teresa, known as "Teri" in her private life, resides in Indiana with her husband Karl. The couple has two adult children, daughters Kayla and Abbey, as well as a grandson, Luke.

Brutal story

I found this story to be a very brutal story, there is rape, killing, baby death, mental illness and prostitution..........wow, there is just no family that I can imagine that could survive all of these incidents in their family. Having a degree in African Studies, and reading both academic and fiction writings of slavery, many incidents mentioned in this book have a high probability of never happening. It mentions how the children of the masters and slaves playing together......during this period black children would have worked not played especially with the white children...friendship may have happened but on a very different level. White masters would not have indulged their children as they did in this book, Josiah allowed Willa to live very much as a white girl would have in his home, this just would not have happened.
In stories like this one the old stereotypes of the masters being benevolent to the slaves and treating them like family or children are so misleading. Ideas of white masters "loving" their slaves didn't happen. The idea of a slave girl having the opportunities that Willa had is very unlikely. While the situations surrounding the characters in this book were very rough, the relationships were kind and loving and very unlikely.
My final thought is that many readers out there are intrigued by the idea of slavery but have not studied the institution in the academic setting, therefore they know only what they learned in stories like Roots, or Queen, which again are fictional. That is why I think this book rated as high as it did for most readers. If you are truly interested in learning about slavery there are many good books out there that are written in first hand accounts that will enlighten you as to what really took place during the time of slavery. Many of them are free on Kindle.

This is a novel that kept my interest from beginning to end. Toward the end of the book I started reading slower because I didn't want the story to end. I am hoping for a sequel. If you liked "gone with the wind" you will love "Heavenly Plantation". Well done Teresa Robison. S. Seaver

I've read two of Craig's novels (his earlier foray into similar space -- "just your average zombies versus the KKK story," as he likes to say -- was Allied Zombies for Peace, a breakneck 42-minute romp through a small town holiday parade that goes to hell with the throwing of an anarchist's bomb and ends up with divisions of WWI vets, WWII vets, Vietnam vets, zombies, and the Ku Klux Klan going to the mat in real time), and here's what I think the Craig Nybo, Novelist, brand is:

Nybo likes small American towns and small-town institutions (diners, parades, sheriffs, local papers), almost to the point of being cliched.  I don't view that pressing against the boundary of the hackneyed as being a bad thing, actually -- I think Nybo knows what he finds evocative and powerful and he goes for its heart, willingly taking the risk that a reader might say "aw, I've seen this before."
Except that the reader hasn't seen this before, unless he's been watching a lot of B monster movies and re-imagining them into the settings ofGoonies or Doc Hollywood.  Nybo's newer novel (I think a third may be imminent, and the teaser at the back of Small Town Monsters suggests that Nybo's continued to put down roots in his brand) is set in rural Montana, and follows an ensemble cast (though principally the Chief of Police, relocated from California and constantly butting up against small town secrets and prejudices, and a young woman with a brutal father and a need to get out of town) through their scrambling reactions as the town experiences the return of an old nightmare it had thought dead and buried: werewolf killings.
It would be easy to turn his small town settings and characters either into cynical critiques of America or shiny two-dimensional posters inviting you to go fishing in the Big Sky Country, and it is to Nybo's great credit that he does neither.  Like David Byrne at his best, Nybo seems to contemplate America with pleasure and, at the same time, an awareness of imperfections.  That combination of affection and realism keep the stories gripping and fresh and prevents them from feeling like some kind of moralistic attack on the American small town.

I am thrilled to announce the audiobook release of my novel, Allied Zombies for Peace. When I set out to write this book, I wanted to do something unique. The entire story takes place in 42 minutes. But it took me just over 8 hours to read it as an audiobook.
Allied Zombies for Peace is about an undead civil rights group who marches for the 4th year in a row behind the KKK. Zombies of the AZP find this disconcerting because they have been fighting for enfranchisement for years. When they march behind the Klan, their goal of awareness for zombies who are committed to peace is foiled. The Klan marchers rile up the crowd and at least some of that resentment spills over onto the zombies. The whole situation blows up into an out-and-out brawl. And this brawl only takes 42 minutes to run its course.

The story of zombies vs. the Klan by itself doesn't take 8 hours to tell. There are other factions in play. Allied Zombies for Peace takes place in 1968, a year when America seemed to be coming apart at the seams.

What better place and time to place a zombie civil rights massacre than in the 1968 Veterans Day Parade in Columbus, Ohio? In this book, along with AZP demonstrators, tension also exists between Vietnam War protestors and recently returned veterans. Even further, the Columbus Police Department has its own problems. A recent internal affairs investigation has caused a rift in politics that blights the police's ability to respond to a full-scale riot. There is further tension between micro factions within the Klan. Some believe the Klan should become legitimate and less violent while others call for mass-scale violence.
All in all, when I wrote Allied Zombies for Peace, I had to break the overall 42-minute event into sub-stories, police against protesters, Nam vets against protestors, zombies against KKK. I hung each story on a few representative characters within each faction and wrote them somewhat autonomously. Once I had all of the stories written, I worked them together into more or less chronological order.
This wasn't easy. I had to manage a lot of characters and try to make them memorable for readers. I had to juggle several stories and keep them all interesting. I had to resolve every point of conflict I opened up. In the end, I am pretty proud of this book.
The zombies are somewhat marginalized and play second fiddle to a larger story. I like that. I didn't want to use zombies as a gimmick so I created very human versions of them.

No Holds Barred

If your idea of great fiction is the account of a boy who can't make short term memories and a German Shepherd that questions its sexuality watching a series of sunsets together and coming to a shared but unspoken epiphany about life, you'd better pass on this one. This book is about zombies.

Also, anarchist troublemakers, hippies, Viet Nam vets, World War I vets, local cops, and the KKK, all mixed up together in a terrifying event history knows as the Veterans Day Parade Massacre. Molotov cocktails, zip guns, police batons, bayonets, and more swing into action in a relentless, tongue-in-cheek, unpretentious tale of civic mayhem. Allied Zombies for Peace doesn't care why there are zombies any more than it cares what the literature professors might think -- it's like a really great B movie, that starts tense, explodes early, and never takes a break.

Lets start by saying I thoroughly enjoyed reading Allied Zombies for Peace by the hilarious author Craig Nybo. The premise of this book is Zombies seek equal rights.. Nybo's novel pits an undead civil rights group against the KKK during a 1968 Veteran's day parade. Throw in a tough as nails faction of Vietnam War veterans, a group of peace loving hippies, a smattering of World War I veterans and the Columbus, Ohio Police Department and an otherwise patriotic parade turns into an unfettered slugfest.

In a zombie loving culture, with such blood-letting offerings as The Walking Dead, World War Z, and countless straight to video movies, it might seem that everything that can ever be done with the undead has already been done. But zombie lovers crave more. This novel pushes the genre by introducing a group of reasoning, thinking zombies.

I’ve had the opportunity to talk with Craig and this is what he had to say about the novel. "The whole novel takes place in a 42-minute time period," said Nybo. "I wanted to write a scorcher, a book that feels like it is going to start on fire right in your hands as you read it. I think this novel is a lot of fun. These zombies just want to be like everyone else," said Nybo. "They want to vote. They want to run for office. And they have a lot to offer in the way of life experience because they can live forever as long as they are not violently killed."

But don't be mistaken; Nybo's zombies, although they represent a passive movement, still know how to bite! Allied Zombies for Peace features all of the violence and chewing zombie lovers have come to love and expect.

This book takes a lighthearted approach to the violence, which makes it a fun read, and not a constant wincer. Sure, it has its fair amount of violence; but that is all tempered by a kind of levity that makes the story more palatable, no pun intended.

This is a great book that you won’t regret picking up!

The Post-Modern Zombie Novel

To begin with, "Allied Zombies for Peace" is not Thomas Pynchon; however, it has the distinctive voice of a post-modern novel. I have been a zombie-genre fan for many years, especially enjoying George Romero's early work. It is a realm that naturally lends itself to social commentary, yet all that has been essentially abandoned in recent years. The current surge in zombie popularity has only lead to a rehash in the flogged trope of gore and violence. I had nearly given up. Enter Craig Nybo's "Allied Zombies for Peace."

To start into this novel, I will have to say it is a bit rough around the edges. But do not take that as a bad thing: This would be like angrily storming out of an Iggy Pop concert only to complain, "That didn't sound like Beethoven!" Having a Master of Arts in English degree, I have a firm understanding of the difference between "classical" literature and "punk rock" literature. I enjoy both for what they are and avoid criticizing the one for not being the other. Ultimately, bad writing is bad writing in any genre. Nybo, while giving us a "punk" novel, delivers a satisfying assault of refined pandemonium closer to Kathy Acker's "Blood and Guts in High School" than Virginia Woolf's "To the Lighthouse."

"Allied Zombies for Peace" is a work of historiographic metafiction that places zombies, nearly discreetly, at the center of a Veterans' Day parade. Nybo judiciously utilizes a fragmented non-linear narrative to cover the scope of the mayhem as the novel spirals into a balanced miasma of violence, plot, and commentary. It is a re-imagining of Romero's "Night of the living Dead" rewritten by William Faulkner (possible title: "As I lay Undying").

Where the zombie genre has been represented, nearly ad nauseam, in film, the literature renaissance is in its infancy. It has come a long way since William Seabrook's 1929 travel novel "The Magic Island," but is still finding its voice. Recent works by Seth Grahame-Smith and Max Brooks have been huge steps forward for the zombie literary movement and "Allied Zombies for Peace" shambles somewhere between "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" and "World War Z." It is entertaining, violent, and referential to the society that spawned it. "Allied Zombies for Peace" is everything I could ever ask for with the printed undead.
